We have driven from CA to FL for the past six years and the last few years evaded Houston and San Antonio by taking I-20 from west Texas to Jackson, MS. and then through Hattiesburg and down to I-10 by Biloxi. Don't do the US Hwy south from Hattiesburg to Mobile because it takes you about ten miles in town traffic in northwest Mobile.

Nice inexpensive RV park at the casino in Vicksburg, stay a couple days and check out the National Battlefield - 17 mile drive thru the park and about every 500 hundred yards another monument.

(We like going to Natchez, south of Vicksburg, too. Nice RV park on the west bank of the Mississippi. The city of Natchez is more tourable than Vicksburg.)

If you do stay on I-10, Go up to Austin and check out the State Capitol Building, There is a nice RV park up by Bee Cave near Lake Travis. Then to German founded city of Fredricksburg (nice RV park in town) near Lockenbach, Johnson City and LBJ Ranch. Tour the Admiral Nimitz Museum (has a submarine half buried in the grass in front of it) and have some very good German food and check out the tourist shops.

If you like seafood and want to do the cooking, Joe Pattiís is an amazing fresh fish store in Pensacola. In addition to daily catches from the gulf, you can find just about anything that swims and other delicious delicacies there.

In Mobile, we stayed at Meaher State Park. It was right on a river and our site backed up to water. They have a problem with sugar ants (and warn you about it). We sprayed everything that touches the ground with ant killer and didnít have any issues. Iíd go back.

Youíre also leaning in towards Mardi Gras time. Mobile is the home to the oldest and original Mardi Gras celebrations. The parades are fun- we did a couple in one day.

Thanks for the info on your stay in St Augustine. We have wintered in FL for years but always on the Gulf side as we live on the Atlantic coast. We will be at Compass for over 2 months next winter. Yes, rates are high in FL during winter and get higher the farther south you go. Expect rates to climb as new sites are rare and new RV sales are setting new records every year.

We visited Fort Pickens and Gulf Shores National Sea Shore yesterday. We had lunch at Peg Leg Petes in Gulf Breeze. This was recommended by the Campground Staff. The food was really good and the whole place was interesting. Some pics from yesterday will follow.

I had to make a trip down to the DC area to see the granddaughter over the weekend. Sounds like you're still having a good time!
I was watching a program tonight about award winning restaurants - you going to be anywhere near The Shed in Ocean Springs, MS on your trip? I love good "Q" and The Shed would have to be on my list if I were in the area.

Keep 'em coming!

Thanks Da Grinch but i think we already went past there. I love good Q also. We are staying near Gulfport Ms. tonight and then heading on west. The weather is just not warm enough for us so we are headed to AZ. We will do our sightseeing on the way home later.
