Travel route

Traveling from Winston Salem to Knoxville. Have a 38' 5er with 2500hd duramax diesel. Anyone traveled this route, are the smoky mountains more than I can handle?

I have taken I-40. Only issue you may have is climbing Black Mountain. You should be ok but will probably drop to 35 going up the mountain. What ever gear you drop to going up you will need going down. I-81 is supposed to be a little quicker per Google Maps but it shows a lot of construction. I have never been that way.

You will climb them at speed but use the tap shifter (6 speed equiped) before the trans needs to shift, keep up the rpm, I pulled from Tampa to MI up 75 and I never slowed below 65, I also ran 70 thru Colorado and Utah and the same, just keep up the rpm. I have did both trips with a stock truck and not so stock.

When I go that way I run 52 to I-77 to I-81. I hate going thur the gorge. I don't worry about Black Mountain my Silverado 3500HD pulls it just fine, I have a 35ft Cedar Creek

Have pulled it many times from Concord with my weak kneed Silverado 1500 with no problems. Just get in the truck lane and follow the semis. I pass a few and get passed once in a while.
