Trip from Andrews AFB MD (DC area) to Boston MA

We are planning a trip in June 2013 fom Florida to Andrews AFB Maryland then north to Boston MA.
I'm driving a 38 ft Georgetown motorhome and pulling a small car.
What would be an easy rouste that I won't have to worry about low bridges or any Parkways that only allow cars.

At present I'm considering going from DC area to Hershey PA then north and enter Conneticut further north from NYC.

Can anyone help in what the best route to use?

Thanks
Iggy

Hang on Iggy I drive that route all the time and will put together a route for you.
Where in FL should I start it?

Thanks Lou,
Actually we will be down in the Florida Keys on Marathon Island.
My biggest worry is getting around N.J. and NYC heading to Boston.
After that we may head to the FROG Rally in Canada in Niagra Falls.
We were looking at 2 routes from Boston to Niagra thru NY the northern route as well as the central route.

All your help will be greatly appreciated.
Planning ahead is always great.

Thanks

This is the NJ to NY portion.
2 warnings

1) DO NOT go through Baltimore. EVERY tunnel prohibits propane.

Go around to the east. BIG fine taking even 1 20 pound propane bottle into any tunnel regardless of open or closed.

2) Belt WEST around New York on I-287 and cross at the Verrazano Bridge. NO WHERE else.

I never plan on going though any tunnels in Baltimore so the propane ban doesn't affect me, but I wonder what the difference is in carrying propane bottles versus having gas tanks in your vehicle is. Propane bottles and gas tanks will both blow up and cause fire if struck with enought force.

Just asking -

Ask them. In 1984 I paid a 100 dollar fine for towing my pop up with one 20 pound bottle through the Patrick Henry Tunnel. When I complained the officer said he would be happy to give me the "other ticket" (a 500 dollar "Risking a Catastrophe" ticket).

I slunk away...

Thanks Lou.
Here is my route around Baltamore and I will not be going in any tunnels.
Seems I will have a slight detour in the city until I get back onthe interstate on the north side.

I'm now looking at the route you suggested in NJ.
Seems yours is further west from I 95.

I plan to get to the George Washington Bridge and I'm allowed to drive on the upper level with trucks. From there into CT is no big deal.
Can't tell on your map where you cross over from NJ to NY to CT?
Thanks
Iggy

I think I would rather swallow the barrel of my M-9 rather than take that route through NY.

IMO, you will wish you had belted around via I-287 to the west and took an extra hour to the Tappan Zee Br (not the Verrazano! Damn another brain cell down) rather than spend 4-5 hours in heavy NY traffic.

It is insane at 2AM so best of luck if you take that route.
Lou

PS You also need to rethink your "shortcut" through Baltimore.
you need to take the outer belt I-695 over the draw bridge and stay out of Baltimore traffic. Stay on I-95 between DC and Baltimore to avoid the low overpasses on the parkway.

Thanks Lou for your route.
I do agree that your way is better considering the madness around NYC.
Here is my Google route I just printed out from Andrews AFB MD to Cheshire CT which is actually my 1st stop in CT.
Take a look at map here>>>. Google Map Link

Seriously, you will have a much more pleasant trip taking the long way around.
I have made numerous trips into CT (Mystic Seaport is a MUST STOP), RI and MASS. I have always taken the outer belt and even then traffic can be tough.

IN the city it is beyond insane; and that includes the inner loops.

Iggy,

I live in Cheshire, CT. When will you be here? What brings you to Cheshire?

Dave

EZ=Pass worth getting for Motorhome and toad?

I have been reviewing my 2013 rout from DC to Boston and to Buffalo NY and it seems that DC, Maryland, NJ, NY, MA, and other states I will travel use EZ-Pass for bridges and toll thruways.

Driving a motorhome and pulling a toad it gets a little expensive so I was looking at the idea in setting up a EZ-Pass account just for this trip.

They also have a special discount plan for 2 axle motorhomes pulling a car. You have to send in a form for it. See atttached.

1. Is it worth the time and effort for this one time trip?
2. If so what happens after the trip? Do I send in the transponder back?
3. What is the best way to pay?

Thanks all for your help.

Iggy

Search EZ Pass here for some valuable tips when driving in NY.

NY is one of the states that requires you to stop at the booth if you have more than 2 axles. They will charge your EZ Pass but because they don't have the sensors in the road they have to enter your class manually.

I live in Mass and highly recommend the EZ pass. Dedicated lanes for pass will decrease your time waiting at tolls! Good luck

I have a Florida only Sunpass that I have not used in 2 years; hope to use it this year though.

You pay a reduced toll using EZ Pass over cash (at least in PA).
