US 4 Across Vermont

Hello All,

The DW and I are looking/planning a trip this summer from Southern Jersey to White River Junction/Hartford, Vermont. I am looking to stay away from NYC and CT roads due to the horror stories I have heard about the condition of these roads. We hope to run the NY Thruway up to just south of Lake George and run US4 to the other side of VT.

My question, how is this route for roadway conditions and elevations?

I used to go to Lake George every year to the Americade motorcycle rally and toured into Vermont a few times, but I haven't been there for probably 25 years now. It's gorgeous country. If you're towing, just avoid roads that are posted as "Closed in the Winter".

Rt 4 is double lane from NY border to Rutland, long climb from Rutland to Killington but doable, on and off climbing lanes to the top, the rest follows the river to Woodstock-Quecchi curvy but generally good roads from what I remember last year. Where are you staying?

We just came to Quechee from Cooperstown, NY area. We took I-88 and got off on Rte 7 into Bennington. Then up Vt 7 and over VT 11 until we hit I-91. There were only two dicey areas that I recall but my wife was driving. There was a bit of congestion in getting out of Albany but it resolved. The road was fairly smooth. The other area was when I missed a turn (we had changed drivers) in Bennington and had to squiggle through the city. I don't recall any difficulty in elevations but that may be because of our set up. We are pulling a pop-up tent camper instead of the 5th wheel I got the 3/4 ton diesel pick-up to pull.

But it wasn't a bad drive. This may have been because it was a Tuesday and around 11:00 AM.

Thanks all!

We’re staying at the White River KOA for the week. Last year we did the NY Seneca Lake wine tour with another couple. This year we decided on a cheese trail tour and Vermont was our pick (Ben & Jerrys helped with that decision).

Looking forward to a relaxing time!

If thats Pine Valley we stayed there last year in the upper level. Decent sites level and a good location for exploring Neww Hampshire as well as Vermont. Crowley Cheese is on of our family favorites. The muffaletta is my preference. If you go to ben and jerrys stop at Cold Hollow Cider mill and get the cider donuts with a jug of cider. Its just up the road abit towards Stowe. King Arthur flour is just a short ride up Rt 5 from White River and is an interesting shop/bakery/deli/classroom for bakers

I live near lake george and actually 500 feet from rte 4. my suggestion avoid albany ny between 8-9 am and 330 -6 pm. get off I 87 ( adirondack northway)at exit 17 and catch rte 4 there towards fort edward.if you get off at exit 20 RTE 149 you will be caught in about 1 mile of traffic that will take you about 20 minutes to cover that distance unless you hit after 9pm. killington( mendon mt) is a steep haul but just take it easy up and down. been to new hampshire many times with 1/2 ton pickup with 5er from fort edward takes about 3 hrs.
