Recently got back from a trip to Houston and stopped at two Corps of Engineers campgrounds in Alabama. Gunter Hill CoE on R.E. Woodruff Lake just west of Montgomery about 10 miles. There are two campground loops. Choose the new loop, Catoma Loop, only a couple years old. All sites are full hookup, level concrete pads well maintained. Because it is new and the fact that it has full hookups it is very popular, especially on weekends. I believe it is $24, I have an America the Beautiful senior pass and it was $12. The other CoE campground is called "Service". It is about 3 miles west of Coffeeville, AL on US Hwy 84. About 12 miles from the Mississippi line. It is not a large campground but is far enough off the beaten path to have easy availability. There are 10 or 12 pull thru's and a number of backins on the bank of the Tombigbee River. Camp hosts keep it very clean. Very nice spot to relax and watch barge traffic on the river. There are some hiking trails back into the forest. Take groceries with you as there is not much around there except a mini-mart in Coffeeville. Limited OTA TV. I will definitely be stopping there again.

An unusual place

Check this place out when you are staying at Joe Wheeler. About an hour away if you don't go through Florence and the traffic. Welcome to Rattlesnake Saloon
It's a few miles southwest of Tuscumbia. One of those off the beaten path places that you think wouldn't be way out here. We ate the burger(not bad, have had better) but that was not the reason for going. One of those places you have got to see at least once! PM me if you need more info.
