Western Kentucky in late September

Tossed a dart at the map and it landed in western Kentucky. Next is finding a good camp site and things to do and see. I would appreciate any tips, must sees or the not so great things for this area. Thanks

I want to go see the Mammoth Cave in that area, but DW doesn't want to take a trip that takes 2 days to get to....

If you go, let us know how it was.

Mammoth Cave is on our to do list so is The Lost River, it will take us most of a day to get to Kentucky from Kansas.

There is also the Rough River area, with both State(1) and Corps of Engineers(4) campgrounds.

Western KY is Land Between the Lakes national recreation area.
If you are a fisherman or hiker or just like hanging out by the water
this is a beautiful area.
Corps of engineers has a nice camp ground at the north end.
If you are motorcycle riders or bike riders there is also much to do and
see. Ride the trace (road that runs north and south) in your car
or on your motorcycle. There are several miles of paved bike path
again mostly on the north end.
Patti's 1880 Settlement in Grand Rivers Patti's 1880s Restaurant Grand Rivers Kentucky has a beautiful outside walking
garden and the world famous 2" pork chop inside. The deserts are out
of this world. There are fotos of presidents on the walls who've visited.
A 2 block walk west from Patti's takes you to the marina on Kentucky
Lake. Many sail boats and awesome sunsets give this area a feel much
like Key West in the evening. I believe there is a tour boat on the lakes
also. Check in Grand Rivers for that.

There are 3 KY state parks on the lakes. 2 are resort parks.
Also Pennyrile Forest State resort park Pennyrile state park in the area.

Mammoth cave NP is awesome but it's more south central KY.
If you want info I've been there several times but you asked about
Western KY....
Come to Kentucky. I visited over 40 years ago and liked it so much
I'm still here!!

Mlangdn and KyDan thank you both for the great info.
We plan on staying in this area for 6 days, we enjoy hanging around the camp site, fishing, biking (light mountain biking), cave tours, historical sites and so on, your input is appreciated.

There are at least 12 miles of mtn bike trails all near the north end.
The north end visitor center will have maps and other info.
The Nature Station - LBL
Happy Camping!

One caveat, stay away from any foot trails that are even slightly over grown.
The area is famous for the tic population.
The mtn bike trails should be ok and of course the paved paths are
fine for walks or bikes.

Does Mammoth Cave National Park have any or decent RV sites or is the Nolin Lake area better?
