Where to go this weekend?? Within 3 hrs of Charlotte NC area...

Hey everyone! I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for where to go this long weekend? We are near Charlotte NC and don't want to drive too far, so thinking of about 2-3 hour radius.

Wanting to go somewhere with a swimming pool, and maybe something interesting (and cheap) to do/see with the kids (ages 9-15).

Also we have one kid on crutches, so rambling around the Smokey Mtn Nat Park, which was our original destination plan, won't work so well.

Any ideas for a nice destination that's easy on the wallet but nice and relaxing?

It will be hard to find anything now. We just got back from Rutledge Lake in Asheville (About 2 hours) and Despite a few problems we liked the place. The sites are tight unless you get one of the pull throughs. They have a nice pool, a lake for fishing, canoeing, paddleboats, etc. There is a flea market down the road that is VERY INTERESTING......
Not sure you'll get a spot but give it a try. Also lake wateree in SC is one of our favorite state parks in the area. Pick one of the outside sites if available. They have a lot more space. Only 30 amp and no sewer but dump station on site. No pool but there is a beach on the lake.

Hope this helps.

The Fontana Resort has a big pool that the campground is allowed to use. The camping has power & water - dump station for sewer. You can probably still get a reservation.

Willow Tree Campground in Longs, SC. Very nice, I put a post with some pictures on the Eastern US thread a few weeks ago. If a pool isn't necessary, Stone Mountain NC is nice as well.

We have a trip planned to the airport to meet the first of our 2 exchange students. First girl comes from Columbia and next week we meet our girl from China. This is going to be different. We just raised twin boys who are out on their own. Wish me luck.

Rugged Brown - good luck with the exchange students. This is something that my husband wants to do, maybe when our kids get a little bit older.

We did find a spot at Magnolia RV in Kinards, SC, which is about 1/2 way between Columbia and Greenville/Spartanburg area off I-26. If nothing else hopefully it will clear up a bit and we can enjoy hanging around by the pool, but may make a side trip to Columbia to visit some friends and the zoo.

Hope everyone has a wonderful and safe holiday weekend - whether you are camping or not!

I know a family that did it for over 20 years. One of their first students is still a very close friend from the Netherlands. We talk almost every day. It will be a great experience as long as you keep an open mind.

Good luck!

Devils Fork State Park near Salem SC which is not far from Clemson. It does not have a pool but a beautiful lake. Campground is wonderful.
