I have to chuckle regarding your remark about snowy/cold weather. Mass. has lots of snow removal equipment. Georgia has NONE. When it snows, or worse yet a little ice hits the ground, everything STOPS until it is gone. Traffic becomes one big Demolition Derby.

I'd say this maybe your best bet as you are only about 20 miles from Gainsville. Also close to shopping if need be. Pretty much have everything you need in Cumming.
State parks around Lake Lanier close for the season right after Labor day Except for Shawnee which I think is not part of the state parks system any more. That is another option if they are open Just south of Cumming on Buford dam road. Here again close to Gainsville. Later RJD

NOTE: Red Top Mountain does NOT have full hook up sites... only for hosts.
My friend is a manager there....I asked him.
Allatoon Landing has some full hook up sites... you can stay only 30 days.

I stayed there last summer on a business trip. It was convenient, but not much of a camping experience for me.

Bolding Mill Campground (COE) is open year round but does not have sewer. You might try volunteering as a camp host which would provide sewer.

I would recommend Stone Mountain Park especially if you will spending an extended time there.. Full hookups, close to Atlanta if you want to explore, lots of hiking trails, great cell service and just a nice park.

Someone mentioned issues with Stone Mountain. Can anyone expand on that?

No big issues just some of the social / political issues evolving the Confederate flag and wanting to add MLK to mountain. Still good place to stay. Later RJD

To expand on Aceinspp comments it revolves around Stone Mountain being a Confederate Monument. There are groups that believe they have the right to deny access to the park because they don't like that. You don't know when those groups will decide to hold a rally. It has calmed down some but I'm sure it will heat up again...

I don't think it's going to close the park. Just a lot of talk for now and if the news folks keep out of it all is well. Later RJD

That's true. Unfortunately some of the local stations are trying to win awards for their news reporting. There are times I suspect they help create some of the "newsworthy" events they cover..

We have stayed at Lanier Island CG and Shoal Creek CG which are right next to each other near Buford, GA. Both are literally out on the lake. Both very clean and well kept, although some of the roads in Shoal Creek are in need of repair. They have a great boat launch.
Both are about 30 miles North of Atlanta. Worth looking into.

If you camp there just make sure you hoist up your flag and support the South
