2014 GMC 2500HD 6.6 duramax/Allison....Rides better than my 2013 Siverado 1500 LTZ w/5.3 MPG in town was 12 to 13 average. MPG in 2500 is 15 to 16 in town. 75 mile camping run averaged out to 16.3 mpg. 8 to 9 mpg in my 1500...to same campground.

He could probably make the cross country tow just fine with a 1/2 ton if he took his time and was careful since there would be nearly no room for error going up and down those mountains. However, I don't recommend it.

Does the 3.5L V6 provide good engine braking down steep mountain grades?

It's a V6??

Nope. I wouldn't use it to tow an 8000lb trailer across a parking lot.

X2,
i have a 1/2 ton Z71 and tow a 4800 lb trailer and it tows it well, however that is about all i want to tow with it. these folk that tow right at or over their limits amaze me. the wear and tear on the truck has to be bad. and i wouldn't be comfortable going down a grade 5,6,7 or higher with that kind of weight on a 1/2 ton

The 3.5 is a twin turbo motor, make no mistake that motor will pull just as well, and typically better than any v-8 currently on the market.
Mine actually pulled better at lower rpms than the Hemi in my 3/4 ton that is nearly double it's size.
Now the Chassis constraints of the 1/2 ton is what made me move up to a 3/4 ton..If I had another 500-600 pounds of payload available in my f-150 I would still have it.

Ok... Guessing I should have explicitly said that these types of questions get so many varied and contradictory answers that most OPs just shake their heads and go on

These threads almost never change anyone's mind. Each of us think they way we do things is the only right way to do it and everyone else should just follow suit. At the end of the day we are each responsible for our own choices.

I guess I should have said "You're right. He hasn't been back since he posted his 'question'." I would have expected him to come back at least once to see if he got varied and contradictory answers... but, for all I know, he had an emergency appendectomy! I agreed with your speculation.
