1500 vs 2500

Originally Posted by BigTJohn OK, 1500 vs 2500 I have had both, driven them daily and towing (same TT for a bit) and I LOVE the 2500 over the 1500. In fact, the ride is almost similar, not quite the cush of the coil springs w/1500 but not at all bad. MPG, same trip, same weather, 1500 = 8.5 mpg, 2500 13.7. Both traveling at 58 mph. With my 5th I get 12-12.5 mpg at 58 mph. Not in a hurry, nobody stays behind me, I move over for Big Rigs or flash when safe to pull back in after passing. So far - very enjoyable.

bakken asked: Did you really pull your Columbus with the 1500? Wow.

Nooo. I did mention TT (it was my Grey Wolf 26RL), not the 5th. But I'll use the 5th if I must or maybe drink part of a 5th. Just Sayin' (insert appropriate emoticon here).

May I ask what 1500 did you have that had coil springs in the rear? I thought 1966 was the last yr of the rear coils on 1500.

Ram went to coil sprung rear in 2009.

I just had visions of pulling something that big with my Ram 1500!
Yikes!
But I see now, as your first set of mileage numbers was for the Grey Wolf, where you got 13.7 with the diesel, and then 12-12.5 with the fifth.
Makes sense now, and I can stop sweating thinking about it!

My mistakes, thought he was referring to GM. But they weren't called 1500 in 1966.

The '09 RAM 1500 w/Hemi had lots of "poop" when you got on it. Could really surprise some of the fart-can cars at times. The 2500 has 2x the torque and only 40 less HP. Same mileage with both in town and hiway.

The hemi really does go, I took one out for a demo ride when I was shopping for a new Ram in 2010. And like any engine that puts out that kind of horsepower, if you get into it, it will inhale the gasoline! I didn't need all that power, so bought the 1500 with the 4.7 engine. That motor can give 25 mpg (US) at 60 mph on a calm day. Not bad for a 4-door 4-wheel drive truck, with the air on!
The Ford EcoBeasts aren't any different. If you keep out of the turbos, it will get great mileage. But lookout if you like to drive fast.
But I am seriously thinking about that big hemi coming in the 2014 Ram 2500's. That should be a beast as well, for those who don't want to go diesel.
Too many choices!

You mentioned the cost of fuel being different. Do the 2500 trucks require higher octane gas?
