Head gaskets only go bad when the EGR cooler starts going bad, or did yours just let go for other reasons??

On a 6.0, head gaskets go bad for a number of reasons, without rhyme or reason.
You can do a bottle test to see gases in the coolant system to help decipher if it's the EGR, the heads, or both.
Usually the EGR does go first, then the heads. One of the guys here (Davel?) lost his on the way to Florida this exact same way.
I've never had a PS. Probably won't, either. I don't like the HPOP system. Too finicky.
I just have been edumacatin' myself on my options. I used to be a Porsche tech, so it's something I enjoy learning about.

As several have said already.....the 6.0 is a crapshoot. I've owned mine for three years. I recelently had work done to 'bullet proof' the engine. There are several things that can be done to this engine without yanking the cab off and replacing the TTY bolts with ARP studs. Keep the boost under 28lbs, and watch the exhaust temps. I installed an STC tuner with stock head bolts. The tuner is programable and you choose between several different options. From a 50hp tow tune, which I use towing, to a 65hp tow, to a 100hp Street tune to a 125hp performance\race tune. The hotter the tune the riskier it is. The 6.0 is a powerhouse and if you can get a stock one at a good price, set aside 5k and get all the lil' gremlins repaired at once and you'll be way ahead and not have payments on a $50,000 truck.

Here is another option: fordcummins.com - Increase Horsepower with Ford Cummins Diesel conversion kits

I found what appears to be one of the (if not the) cheapest places in the states for Powerstroke parts!
Less than $500 for ARP studs? Wow.

Yikes!
At least now moving forward, truck should be trouble free for awhile

This engine has only 4 bolts per cylinder, I have installed with friends many sets of studs and they are less then 500 , compared to the dmax which uses 6 per cylinder, and they run about 700 for the kit in 12mm, install 14mm and that price goes up a lot but machine work on the block is required

Thanks for all the responses, I'm going to pass on the truck. Its still listed for sale, its in outstanding condition , well taken care of. I think the reason it has not sold is the real possibility of engine issues, down the road. If so they will not be cheap. Besides I just washed and waxed my gas F250 and it looks pretty good, even drove a little better, and its mine. Lots of experience on this site and I listen to them all, it seems to much of a crap shoot for me. Thanks again. Chuck in Va

Moving forward to the house in the morning. All fixed and came with a two year warranty on all parts and labor good at any Ford dealer. That could mean another 50k miles for me. Been gone since the 5th...whew, that's a trip!

I'd love a bullet-proofed 6.0!
jevanb - do you do cab-off work? Are you working at a shop?
