2004 Toyota Tacoma
Just wanted to chime in on how pleased I am with my tow vehicle. I am towing a 2010 Surveyor Sport 186. My tow vehicle is a 2004 Toyota Tacoma XtraCab, Automatic, 3.4L V6. We just came back from our first big trip. We traveled from Orland, CA to eventually Trinidad, CA. We traveled over Hwy 20, up Hwy 1, Up Hwy 101, and eventually east up and over Hwy 299. This truck did great, averaging 11-13MPG. Once I accepted the fact that we weren't going to break any speed records, the trip was excellent!

I can squeeze out 11 mpg, but I have to forget about the 13.

The only way we get 11 or higher is disconnected.

Amazing how these smaller tow vehicles do the job. I am pulling an SV210 with a 2007 Honda Ridgeline. I get about 9-10 towing and almost 20 (record is 22) not towing. Gave up on a larger camper so I would not have to part with my Ridgeline...

Jeep Liberty & 186 Sport
Pictured is my Surveyor Sport 186. TV is a 2005 jeep liberty 3.7 V6 & auto trans. 11 to 12 MPG towing & around 20 highway not towing. Prodigy brake controller, 600/6000 equalizer hitch, upgraded cooling system. Been from North Carolina to Maine. I tow with OD off no problems staying at 60mph. Handles great as well. I am guessing around 3500# loaded. Even though Jeep says it will tow 5000# and 24feet I would not go any bigger.Perfect little rig for me and the wife.

Kegstealer, another nice looking setup.
I think this is a good thread that shows that midsized trucks and SUVs can handle a conventional travel trailer without having to upgrade to a bigger vehicle. Without getting into the stats of each TV and TT, it looks like each of the setups here are a good fit. The main thing is each owner has stuck with a smaller travel trailer, hopefully well within the towing capabilities of each of their TVs, as well as sticking to shorter TTs to compensate for the lighter TVs and shorter wheelbases. That, along with a properly setup WDH and sway control, should give each owner years of safe traveling.
You don't have to own a 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton or even bigger to enjoy taking your home with you.......albeit you just have to take a smaller home.

I am running Equalizer 600# bars and Prodigy controller as well. There are 3 of us (8 yr old) so we went with the SV210. If just me and the wife, we probably would have the 186 as well - don't think there was much price difference as I recall though. I run 60-65 depending on the grade. Just have to get over the higher RPMs vs. a v-8. My Ridgeline has hit 4500rpm on a hill a time or two.
