2008 Tundra towing Windjammer?

We've been tent camping for years and this is our first RV purchase so we're definitely n00bs and would appreciate any advice you all are willing to offer.

I've been reading through the forums and I'm on the fence about buying a Windjammer. With an advertised dry tongue weight of 742lbs for the 3008W model I'm thinking we'll actually be closer to 1050lbs by taking 12% of the 8742 lb GVWR. Is the combination of GVWR, overall length and tongue weight going to be too much for my 2008 Tundra (10,000lb tow cap, 1650lb payload cap) if I use a WDH?

While some posts make me feel like we're going to be fine, others make me wonder if our rig is going to careen into oblivion on the first hill we encounter. I'd really like some feedback from folks with a similar setup to get a feel for what to reasonably expect.

You should be good to go. Get a good wd hitch with built in sway control such as the Equal-i-zer or Reese Dual Cam. A 1,000/10,000 lb hitch should work for you.
I believe Prodigy makes the most popular brake controller.

You need to know a lot more numbers than you are giving. Weight of the truck, with people and luggage, weight of trailer, axle weights of truck...... Search for towing, get your numbers, do some math. The advertised tow rating on most vehicles is for bare vehicle and fuel, by adding people and cargo, that weight reduces. Besides, it doesn't matter what any ones opinion is on here, it ain't gonna make it safe, or legal. You have to to DO THE MATH.

My Grady White 228 with boat, full tank of gas (125 gallons) and trailer comes in around 8,000 pounds and I can tell you the Tundra pulls the snot of that thing. I live in the Smoky Mountains and pulling is a breeze...what the Tundra does well is stopping which is more important than going....I am very pleased with my Tundra and it's towing capabilities.

Now you will have a bit more wind resistance with that travel trailer than I have pulling my boat, but weight wise I can attest the truck handles the load just fine.

2010 CrewMax pulling a 31' (36 overall), loaded weight 8000+/- and no problema. I use a Reese dual cam ans once i got it dialed in sway has not been an issue.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies! We're going with a Reese or equalizer and definitely getting the prodigy BC. Now I just need to figure out how to finance this beast and we'll be on our way!!

My Tundra does a good job towing our Rockwood 8319. We usually average about 8-9.5 mpg while towing.

Picked up my 8528BHSS 5th wheel last week with my 2008 Tundra and I was amazed at how well it towed. My opinion is that it tows better than my 02' silverado 2500HD w/ 6.0 liter.

What's the Pin weight on your carriage? Though you're under the GVWR, it seems most 5th wheels are too heavy for a half-ton.
