2010 RAM 1500 programmer for towing

the hemi is a beast and tows great, but sucks that gas!!! would a programmer set for towing mode actually help with mpg? i know my tires dont help much but was exploring what options are out there

Unfortunately, a gas motor is always going to kill the mpg towing with a programmer you might need to use 93 octane and at the most get 1 better mpg, best thing is slow down. With my diesel I always saw 9 to 11 with the TT. Went to a 5er now see 12.5 almost all day

Yea I know gassers don't see much from programmers...I'd love to upgrade to a 2500 diesel but the one I want is hard to swallow that 50k

I set cruise on 60-65, flat land it's good for 10mpg but head north to the hills and I'll drop to 8.5-9.5

I guess I should see if they would help with shift points and what not

you'll probably spend more on fuel. 93 octane requirement with minimal if any MPG improvement makes it not worth it

On the diablo, they offer a mileage booster tune with 87 octane then they have 3 different performance tunes for 87,91, and 93 octane

I might try a tank out on 89 octane just to see if that makes a difference

Don't use cruise while towing if you want the best gas mileage. With cruise it's just pouring the fuel in trying to maintain a speed it shouldn't be maintaining. You're better off using no cruise and letting the truck slow up slightly when pulling grades.

My Superchips towing tune uses 87 octane. I honestly don't see much difference between it and the stock tune - tow/haul mode. I think it was intended for those who don't have the tow mode. My truck will tow great on cruise at about 60 for a while then for no reason start gear hunting, and I have to shut the cruise off.

If you're getting 10mpg on flatlands then that is very good. Why do you say "I know my tires don't help much" are you running a larger size or an aggressive tread?

I use cruise except when i get into some hills. Then i kick it off and feather the pedal with my foot. The Ford cruise control is lazy wen trying to maintain speed when approaching a hill. My Dodge was great when towing in the hills with the cruise on.

The dodge cruise works great in the hills....I feel it maintains the speed better then I can during hills

I run a 35 x 12 nitto trail grappler so that took away from my mpg just by itself

If you want a programmer, look at the SCT programmer. You buy these from SCT dealers who offer custom programming and typically you get 3 or 4 custom tunes with the purchase. They offer 87,89,91 and 93 tow/performance tunes as well as economy tunes for most vehicles they support. I have 87,89 and 91 tow tunes as well as an 87 economy tune for my truck and an 87 economy tune for my 2009 Escape.
