2013 Chevy 3/4HD towing

I currently tow a 25 foot Salem Cruise Lite (pull behind) with my Chevy with NO problem at all.
We are going to be moving up to a 5th wheel.
I was looking for any advice on moving "up" to a 5th wheel about how much to tow, and your experiences.
When I bought the Cruise Lite, "oh yes, no problem with your truck". Well after the second trip, I went out and bought a 3/4 ton. Spent hours and hours changing my hitch configuration around and was never happy with how the 1/2 ton truck handled, not the power aspect, but steering etc...
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Diesel or gasser (engine size and differential ratio. With a diesel you don't worry about that crap) My 2500 duramax handles 12,000 and 2,000+lb pin weight with ease.

That's a loaded question that you have asked. A lot depends on what type of powertrain do you have in the truck. Diesel engine, Allison transmission, 4X4 and what type of differential 4:10 or some other size. Also what type of tires and rim size do you have.

I have a 3/4 ton Ram but I have been towing heavy with this truck and I know the capabilities of the truck and what I have done to increase the ability of the truck.

Ext cab or crew?

the last gas 3/4 ton I had was an 09 GMC and with the 3.73 axle ratio it was only rated to tow little over 9000 lbs. Now I have a 2014 single rear wheel 1 ton Chevy Duramax and it's rated for 16,800. Towing is a breeze now

Gas 2013

I have the gas 2013 GMC 2500. I know it is slightly different but here is my experience.

My TV is the 2013 6.0 liter gas 2500 4x4 with the 6.5 bed and an extended cab. I pull a 10,500 dry weight 5th wheel that is about 1700 pounds of tounge weight. My truck has a payload of 2900lbs. So I am well within the payload limit.

Pulls nicely, rides nicely. I do not think the truck has the power to deal with mountains but I lice on the prarie so it is nice and level.

I use the turnover ball companion hitch (no slider) and have had no problems at all.

Good luck with your search!

I have a 2013 2500HD crew cab gas Z71 and a Crusader 296BHS. Going from memory it is in the 10K-11K dry and prob little over 12K loaded. We have not been in tall mountains yet but have been in the Ozarks. I have not had any trouble. I had the same experience with our previous TT with moving storage around/ shifting wait and never could get it to handle the way I wanted. The FW is more trailer but handles remarkably better. As Bob stated I have the B&W turnover ball goose neck hitch and companion FW hitch. I will not have another truck without this set up.

The biggest problem you will face is filling-up this gas vehicle with the trailer attached. You will be anywhere from 45' to 53' long or longer. Now look at the gas island and how they are placed in most filling stations. Now try to picture the truck and camper pulling out of the filling station and clearing this gas store.

I pulled a 30' 5er with my 2001 Chevy 6.0L gas engine truck only twice total length was about 45'. After the last pull I told my DW either we get a diesel equipped truck or we sell the 5er. We are now on our third 5er a CC34RL being pulled by a 6.7L Cummins equipped truck.

We are about 54ft going down the road and yes he will need to pick his gas stations very wisely. I have not had a real problem yet. Having owned big trucks I tend to be careful not to get into spots I know I can't get out of.
Also unless you are fueling your diesel trucks at truck stops ONLY the pumps can still be a bit tight for a long truck and tt or 5er.
