get the 3.73's and max tow. you might see a difference of 1-2 mpg irl driving conditions. you also get the select shift transmission with that.

Thanks everyone for your input! Based on the info from this thread and the discussions that we've had with others, we have to go with the f150 ecoboost max tow package or upgrade to a f250. If we go to the f250, we can't afford a 2013 diesel so we'd have to go with a 2011 6.7 diesel that we found with 25k miles or a 2013 f250 gas engine which will probably be horrible in gas mileage. I'd much prefer to go with a brand new vehicle so that we can get a full warranty, but we're not sure if a 2013 f250 gas engine will have the power that we need by uprgrading to a f250. Does that make sense lol?

Remember if you buy used you can get full warranty through 3rd party service contract via selling dealer. The gas V10 engines were great for towing in a F250. Current V8 gas????????

IMO...if this will be a truck you will keep for awhile, given the camper you are getting and not wanting to regret mpg/power issues...go with the used F250 diesel and as others pointed out, get a third party warranty that will extend the current warranty remaining.

The 2013 f250s gas trucks that are in our price range have the v8 motors, not v10. Here is the 2011 6.7 diesel truck we really like with 22k miles:

I think you are on the right track size wise. I would be nervous pulling this beast with a 1/2 ton. The old question of can I vs. should I...

Keep in mind the GVWR on these trailers is almost 11K, which I could see hitting with water tank full, gear for a week, groceries etc.

How much driving do you do? As pointed out above, sometimes the difference in MPG, depending on the amount of driving you do, is less than what you think. I love my diesel, but they are not really for everyone. A F-250 gas engine would pull this fine.

they dropped the v10 gas engine a few years back. they did not sell that many, most people wanted the diesel.

Love those King Ranch trucks. Much larger, heavier truck, which is exactly why it does so much better towing large trailers.

With 2 young kids we keep our camping trips fairly close to home. For example, we took our 2012 Jayco Greyhawk Class C out 12 times last year and only put 1,500 miles on the motorhome. I'm guessing the next couple years will be the same. However, my husband will drive the truck for work about 15k-20k miles a year!

Beautiful truck...Hmmm, that be hard for me to pass up given your requirement!
Write down all the pros vs cons to help make your decision based on your comfort level...then move on it!

I just bought a Nitro 24FQS toyhauler and have an ecoboost with max tow. I towed this trailer one time and ordered an F250 a week later. The eco has plenty of power but isn't big enough to handle the sway. My trailer is 8 1/2' wide and 12' tall. It weights 5500 lbs empty and gross is 10,800 lbs. I had the dealer replace the e2 with the better 4 point Equalizer which helped some but if you get a strong wind from the side you will end up in the ditch or slowing way down. My eco with the max tow and 3.73 was getting from 7-9 mpg, this was on level ground and rolling 1-2 degree hills. I figured the mountains would put it in the 5-6 mpg range. Based on the sway factor and the sorry towing mpg I choose to buy the F250 with the diesel

how long do you typically keep a vehicle? Just ball parking here, but for comparison sake, the 2013 Ecoboost will probably avg 20mpg, the 2011 6.7 PSD will probably be about the same. but of course diesel costs bit more at the pump, and the maintenance costs are also slightly higher. For most people, diesel does not make sense unless you drive a lot of miles, which you all do. Also - your plans may change as the kids get older. We are thinking of trips ot the grand canyon, Disney etc. I realized not long ago that we will pull this trailer long distances in the coming years.

Get the 2011 diesel with an extended warranty through the Ford dealer. Or better yet look around for a 2011 f350 diesel, not much more in price but you will be ready for your future 5th wheel with the increased payload capacity. The 6.7 makes unbelievable power and gets great fuel mileage.

Have you checked the payload sticker on it? I recently read an article on Pickuptrucks.com and the tested a KR F250 6.7 and it only had a 1972lb payload. Something to consider if you want to updrade in a few years.

If you have to go with the F250 gas, the 6.2L will provide you with enough engine for that rig. Fuel mileage would likely be a concern for you depending on your usage. I get 13 hwy unloaded and 9 pulling.

After reading this story and hearing a few other similar stories, we have talked ourselves into getting the f250. Now, we have to decide on the used diesel or new v8 gas. We know that the diesel will get better gas mileage, but has the disadvantages of being a diesel (upkeep, cold weather, etc.) We have never had a diesel engine before and just hope we don't end up regretting it.

As far as the picture of the 2011 f250 diesel that we are looking at, it is not a King Ranch. It is actually a Lariat.

Thanks! We were wondering what the gas engine fuel economy would be, couldn't find it anywhere by doing a google search.

Whatever your choice, diesel or gas, the fit, finish, and comfortability of these trucks is outstanding. I've had both diesel and gas; no regrets with either.

I would go with the used diesel. Everything that I have read from 6.7 owners is that they can equal or beat the ecoboost in unloaded hwy driving mpg and beat it towing.
I have read of very few problems with the 6.7 diesel, mainly a few transmission issues when they first came out.

I think that the 6.2 gas engine will give you awful fuel economy especially since Ford derated its hp and torque as opposed to the version that is in the F150

This is the evolution of decision that gets most people to a turbo diesel. First you decide between a 1/2 ton a 3/4. Once you get yourself to the 3/4 ton, you notice how dismal the MPG numbers on the large gas engine, and then start to look at the turbo diesel.

As a diesel owner, I tend to actually shy away from recommending a diesel right away to people who have not owned diesel engines. There are definite trade offs. Diesel is more expensive, to buy the truck, to buy the fuel, to maintain the truck. Off course a a lot of that cost is offset as the truck keeps it's value (a diesel will depreciate very little in years 3-7, where as gas trucks suffer huge depreciation in the same cycle).

Many of the "drawbacks" people expect with diesel are myths. Cold starts are really no big deal. And block heaters actually result in less warm up time to get the interior up to temp in the morning, saving you fuel on cold mornings. They smoke very little, and the 6.7 is barely louder than a gas engine.

You all will have to crunch your own numbers, but if it were me, I would go with the F250 turbo diesel. I actually drive around 50K miles per year for work. I now own a work car plus our truck. But for years I drove turbo diesel pick-ups for work because I needed one to tow. My preference is the diesel truck for highway driving regardless of whether something is hooked up or not.
