2014 F 150 Eco Boost Questions

I think I have narrowed my new TV down to a 2014 Eco. I know a lot has been written about these trucks and the numbers look good. A couple questions I have:
What's the difference between Max Tow and without Max Tow. From the numbers I've seen, it looks like about 1000 Lbs and a different radiator.
What's the difference with Max Payload? I think I've seen 3 different options for payload numbers. What does Max Payload get you and can it be achieved with after market parts.

I'm looking at either new or slightly used 4x4, would prefer super cab with 6.5 foot bed (would settle for crew cab with 5.5 bed). Would like a XLT model, but would settle for FX4 or King Ranch. The 2014 with Eco Boost are getting a little harder to find, that's why I ask what is acceptable.

To my knowledge, the 2014 and 2013 models and option packages are pretty much identical. My research revolves around 2013 models, so you might want to confirm that is in fact the case.

MaxTow differences:
Different rear springs (20" wheel option trucks have same as MaxTow)
51 tube vs. 41 tube radiator
Trailer Brake Controller (also included in many packages such as my 302A XLT)
Slightly different steering ratio
Tow Mirrors (I added these)
"Upgraded" rear bumper (slightly different design on the receiver hitch- 50lb tongue weight rating difference, IIRC)
3.73 gear ratio



The HD Payload has some upgrades that aren't easy to duplicate. For example:

7 lug HD wheels
Thicker frame than some models (though some non HD setups have same thickness
Heavier rear axle with 4.10 gears


I have a 2013 SCrew 4x4, 3.55 axle ratio regular tow with the following options: Firestone Riderite airbags, load range D tires, Rancho RS9000XL adjustable shocks, factory tow mirrors. I contend that my setup with these upgrades is a more stable and capable platform than a stock MaxTow regardless of what the stickers say. You are likely to find it near impossible to find a 2014 with the HD payload package, and I would think it is unlikely to find a MaxTow.

LT Tires a must have, I have 20 inch wheels and King Ranch. Tows great and hold the road. In my case I do not have airbags or timbers. I don't seem to need them the way I load the trailer and nothing to speak off in the truck bed. I do not find any lack of power and torque thru all gears up to 5th at 60mph. No screaming like the 5.4 l V8 Triton i used to have.

I am at the limit with my Trailer measured 9500 lbs.

I tow with a 2013 crew cab eco with standard tow package, that does have integrated brake controller. It has a 9200 lb tow rating where the max tow would have a 11300 lb rating. My trailer has a 5800 lb dry weight and the truck tows it fine. I did buy some mirror extensions for it since the stock mirrors don't extend out. If you're going to stay below 8000 lb max trailer the standard tow package should work.

You don't have to stop it- it has it's own brakes. And as far as starting- you clearly haven't towed with an Ecoboost. Would you pull 16,000 with a 1 ton? If so you'd be towing ~1.6x the weight of the TV. At 9500 you are towing ~1.4x the weight of the TV with the F150 Ecoboost. I don't see the problem or what is so scary about that??????

I have a 2014 F150 SCrew XLTEcoboost and love the towing package. I put LT tires and airbags on it. I was looking at getting a stiffer shock, but they don't make Rancho's or Bilsteins (sp) for the model that I have.

I am pretty confident you will have the exact same shock I have on my 2013. The Rancho RS9000XL, model number RS999384 is the one that fits the rear.

Eco boost

If you want the most get the lariat with off road package 18" tire Eco boost with Max tow package it will give you everything u need if you aren't towing the max get the 5.4 get better gas mileage I had max tow a friend of mine had regular lariat he got 2-3 miles per gallon better than me we both towed about 7800 lbs

He's gonna have a hard time being that picky getting a 2014 model 3+ months into 2015. Plus, if he wants a new one with the 5.4 he's gonna have to find a dealer that still has a 2010 in stock.

That was the assumption I was under, after talking to Ford there is a slight variation in the 2014 frame so none of the shock manufacturer's will certify their shock on them. No longevity since Ford changed up everything on the 2015. I am still tempted to by the Rancho's and see if they fit. I hear nothing but praise for people who have them installed.

I agree the Eco is does not sip at the fuel, I had the 5.4 with a bumper pull, the term Ford Screamer from the 70's comes to mind when climbing a hill. It takes fuel to make torque and acceleration, I pay with the Ecoboost for that. FTR I am still 1900 pounds under the maximum weight towable by my truck as equipped from the factory, add LT tires I am pretty confident it is over the rated 11,200 as equipped. The trailer GWRW is 10,000, I am under it by 500 lbs so I don't really see problems.

The one problem you will have is getting all the RV related packages on one (used) Truck. We had ours built to order at the factory with every tow/haul feature on the truck.


If raw towing power is what you want, and the checkbook can stand it, take a look at the 2014 F150 EcoBoost - that thing is a towing BEAST @ 11K!

I still have my factory rear shocks. Maybe compare part numbers and see if yours are the same???

Here is what HD Payload Pkg. gave me in my 2013 Lariat F150: GVWR of 8200lbs. 17" 7 lug wheels with E rated all-tererain tires, HD shocks, upgraded springs and radiator, aux. trans oil cooler, larger dia. rear axle w/9.75 gear set and 3.73 LS diff.

You can only get the HD Payload Pkg. in a XL, XLT or Lariat. With an FX4 and King Ranch it is not available. Also not available if you get the Off-Road pkg.

Max Trailer tow pkg. in 2013 gives you a class IV trailer hitch, 7 pin wiring harness, upgraded rad., aux. trans. cooler, trailer brake controller, upgraded rear bumper, Select Shift auto trans, chrome-capped Power-Scope power-telescoping/-folding trailer tow mirrors, heated glass, integrated turn signals and security approach lamps.

Everything I quoted was taken directly from the Ford 2013 brochure. I would think that a 2014 would not have changed.

Where it gets confusing is that many of the things you listed in the MaxTow are included with all Ecoboost trucks. My 2013 NON MaxTow included the class IV hitch, 7 pin, same aux. trans cooler, trailer brake controller (only available in certain packages, mine is 302A XLT), Select Shift trans, etc. You need to read the tech document I attached earlier and forget what is in the brochure. I'll also add that the 9.75" gear is on all Ecoboost trucks. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty confident the only thing using the 8.8" was the base model 3.7L trucks.
