My 2011 EcoBoost was getting 17.5 no name brand (no TT). Low fuel came on, filled with Quick Check regular - mileage dropped to high 15s low 16s. Could this be too much ethanol?

tranny temp

Just took my new tt on road trip 8500# I have 2014 ecoboost 4X4 without the upgraded towing package. While in the mountains my tranny temp hit 215 at times, is this to high, do I need ext cooler?

I would add it if I were you. This is the reason I went for the Max Tow package on my 2013, I have never gone over 203 no matter what the conditions are. 220 degrees is when you really need to worry and the trans fluid starts to break down.

joeallphase,

There is only one auxillary transmission cooler. The max tow does not have a different one.

It is likely you have what is known as the 535 towing package. Go to this link and follow the directions for Fordetis. Then look in your build details for the supercooling radiator and trans cooler. http://www.f150ecoboost.net/forum/6-...okup-site.html

Like Stevebolt said, I wouldn't be concerned with 220, but he either hasn't driven in the mountains or hasn't looked at the temps running in the mountains. 203 will be surpassed many times in the mountains. As long as it drops below 215 once your climb is done, you will be fine.

Yes add an extra cooler . try and keep temps below 200 when pulling passes .
my 6L gas 2500 stays at 160 normal towing and about 195 to 200 pulling steep grades . so temps are up for a short time and then drop heading down the backside . I have to 2 coolers that came stock plus a third i added

Realizing heat is always an enemy, this isn't a 6L and it is virtually a brand new vehicle (2014). I do not recommend giving his dealership or Ford any ammunition to deny some future warranty claim by changing something that is within spec for a new vehicle.

PS IIRC coolant temp doesn't go yellow on this vehicle until 230+ degrees.

He is towing a large load and pushing the tv to it's limits . either buy a truck suited for the job or upgrade the one you have . running at 200 ++ all the time will shorten the life of the tranny just about when the warranty is up . he may just go to the dealer and have them do something that will not void his warranty . they can always say he towed beyond the trucks capability if the tranny should go sooner . then try and prove you did not !

can't much speak of spec if in the long run it costs you plenty in repairs . why put the truck through it just because it's with-in spec .

I can't tow in the hills without going over 203. Either something is wrong with mine, or folks aren't watching their gauge as close as I do. Most of the time, a long 6% or greater grade, during the summer, will put mine in the 210-215 range. I quickly settles at 194 afterwards.

In 100 degree Arizona heat pulling a long 10% grade, I saw the high 220's. I pulled over and let it cool at that point.

In all my internet reading, I gather that up to 230 is not to be alarming. This is hotter than older standards, but the fluid is designed for it.

Ok I'll chime in my 2011 Eco with a 373 rears and a 7250 rating. Have ford service tranny first was 30.000 filter never flush then just at 75.000 filter fluid change and flush since new truck temp is 193 empty climbing a 3 mile grade at 7 percent 215 pulling my vibe 223 then back down to 193/198 fluid is the life of any tranny and heat is the death by servicing your tranny on a regular basis will keep it from failing. Truck has 84.000 and no issues with tranny

Yepper! You got it right! You probably will never have tranny trouble. Many moons ago, I had a 1969 camper special 3/4 ton dodge with the old 3 speed Loadflyte trans. That truck went 360,000 miles before the trans gave out. There wasn't much body left due to the good old Michigan salty winters, but like you said maintain the truck and it will serve you well.

I have 24K on my 2014 so your saying I should service mine at 30K? My dealer does everything and switched to Synthetic oil but change it at 25% since I tow from March to November

This summer in CA Central Valley we consistently saw 100+ temps. Pulling just about anywhere, my temps never got below 200. I'm averaging ~205 pulling flat, ~213 going uphill, and the hill isn't anything to write home about. I think the steepest is 7%. I did see ~224 going up 7% when I punched it in the fast lane to pass a semi, but I laid off once I was able to get back into the slow lane and it dropped down to about 215 before I reached the peak. I had just assumed low 200's were normal when towing.

I'm normally running trans temps between 195 and 203 while towing here in the flats of Florida. Your 100 degree towing days, and temps of 220 seem normal.

Wicked 1 having two family members who are master techs one for ford and the other in vw both are always at it between service advice it's really comical some times but they both agree that after about 30/40 thousand miles drop the transmission pan and change the filter although not recommended in your owners manual the newer electronic transmissions need to be maintained and by dropping the pan early will only extend the life of your transmission just like the oil even though the recommended time is around 10.000 miles when pulling I'll drop it at 5.000 especially with turbos the oil is prt of their life as well

3,000 to 4,999 miles for an oil change is specified in the manual (when towing), but I am with you on the trans fluid/filter change. I did (and will do) mine every 25K.

Since the first Oil Change it goes to the dealer for everything they do the Oil change for free but since I made them switch to Synthetic the first one I pay only $27 for the difference but most of the other minor items they cover. I am at 23K now and usually change the oil at 5,000 because I tow a trailer. I feel whatever the dealer recommends I will do in case something happens they have records of my entire maintenance history, usually they will be able to cover more that way but we will see getting it certified pre owned in May and buying it off of Fords lease, like my 2014 FX4 no need for a new one
