2014 Ford F-150 Crew EcoBoost Fuel Economy

Just trying to see what roughly others are getting. I have a 2014 Ford F-150 FX4 Crew with EcoBoost. I keep truck and trailer tires at Max PSI and pull a 23IKSS Roo with gear Roo is 5400 Truck basically stock no extra weight just 2-3 ppl and tank of Fuel.

Without trainer I am getting roughly 19-20 MPG combined, pulling I get and avg of 9-10.5

Anyone with an EB what are your ranges I can only seem to get 300-350 per tank pulling my Roo.

If you do a search you will find this has been discussed many times.

You do better than I do without the trailer. I can only net about 17 at best. When I towed my 6500lb pound trailer it was 9 or 10. I am assuming my 4500 pound roo will be the same.

3.55 gears.

Yes I have 3.55 Gears and 16,900K on it, and it is only a year old but did a lot of driving first 6 months now not so much. I was towing a 66# Shasta now I have the 23IKSS Roo and about the same but struggles less up hills with the 1600# savings on TT weight.

I switched to synthetic oil first trip and even towing trans only gets to 201 degrees but thinking of having Ford put the factory tranny cooler in when they do the 2.5" leveling kit in the front in June, might help with the heat etc. I am still running on Pirelli's for now at Max PSI when towing and 35PSI when not

Sounds like great mileage to me. I don't check mine when towing. I know it manhandles my 9K+ trailer whereas a V8 would be screaming on every incline, and that's what matters to me.

I will add: For the life of the truck, I'm showing right at 13mpg (just shy of 25K). I had a 2011 6.7PSD with the same type of driving that showed 14.2 for the 8,000 miles I had it. Since everyone crows about how awesome the mileage is on the new diesels, looks like I'm doing alright.

BTW, raising the truck will hurt fuel economy.

I think your tranny temp sounds pretty good if it is only climbing to 201 degrees.

I am pretty happy with MPG considering a diesel wouldn't do much better with my Roo. I also have the 36 Gallon tank, but I don't plan on lifting the truck just putting in the Leveling kit to even the front with the back.

Also replacing the Pirelli's with BFG KO2's LT275/55/20 10 Ply much bette than these 6 ply tires as they are very soft, wearing already on the ends and my alignment is right on

I have same truck, but a '13. Pulling a total of 10k lbs total. No problem on flat land. Probably won't go to mountains. Getting abt 8 mpg.

Seems pretty typical of any gasser pulling a big box behind it. I have 2012 F150 EB. Did a 5000 mile trip from Chicago through Southwest region ( NM, AZ, CO) pulling a Roo 19. Overall average was 10.5 MPG. Probably 95% towing. Best tank was 12.5 MPG heading south to St Louis. Worse was 6.5 from Tulsa to Amarillo pulling into a steady 20 MPH wind. Pulling through mountains did not effect MPG much. Lost MPG in the way up, gained back on the way down.

Do you have the Aux tranny cooler and what gears? According to the Ford Mechanic and Service Mgr. they said with my 3.55 gears they were tall enough to pull close to 11K even though mine states 9800#? Only difference between max tow is Aux cooler, 3.73 gears and 18" tires instead of 20 but I am dumping Pirelli's for BFG KO/2's for a LT instead of a P rated.

I thought it was verified if you had either towing package (standard or max), you have the same super cooling radiator and there is no difference in the cooling systems.

I looked up my non-max tow build sheet and it listed the super cooling whatever it is called.

I think the difference between an FX4 crew standard tow eco and a max tow eco are the mirrors, gearing and 18 inch wheels. In other words, not much...but you do get a better payload sticker which would sure be nice...no doubt about that.

I could be completely wrong as well.

Yeah Ford leaves you guessing on some items. I thought there was an Aux cooler, I will find out and repost, but not getting those mirrors, pair is $650 and installation is $350, besides the ones I have work fine. Many ppl told me 3.55 are tall enough to tow up to max not that I would but a friend who is a retired Ford mechanic said they are a PITA to swap so not going to 3.73's. I like my 20"s stock black rims so sticking with them just adding BFG's when Pirelli's are done.

2015 models have the highest tow rating with the 3.55 gears. I've always said that there is no need for lower gears than 3.55 with the 6 speed tranny and torque curve of the EB. Only reason for lower gears is to keep the engine revving higher- not needed to stay in the torque curve on the EB. My doc on the 2013 models indicate that there is a 51 tube versus 41 tube radiator on the MaxTow- trans cooling is same. I suppose if I was pulling at max through Death Valley in the middle of the Summer at 70mph I might notice a difference in the 51 and 41, but I think they were mainly just looking for some really cheap changes they could make to justify people getting the MaxTow.

I have the charcoal version of your appearance package wheels and I do like them quite a bit but I am debating switching to 18" wheels if I move to LT tires...it just seems to open up a few more tire options. I am going to try and get one more season out of the pirelli tires though. I am right about the same mileage as you. I will be anxious to hear your feedback as you make any changes as it will help fuel my future decisions.
