2014 Ram 1500

As a life long GM 1500 owner I have come across a great lease offer on a 2014 Ram Express Crew Cab 5.7 Hemi, 3.92 rear end, 8 speed transmission, and class IV hitch. I had to make some upgrades to LT tires and Hellwig Springs on my silverado and towed ok. My tongue weight on my Salem is a crew cab killer at 1000lbs. I have no desire to upgrade to a 2500 for the 4-5 tows a year. My question is will the P rated 275-60-20 tires hold up and should I expect to add some support to the rear suspension such as springs or air bags. I really did not want to go that route again if I can avoid it.

Thanks for the input.

The tires should hold for a while. I ran that size in a goodyear wrangler hp tire on a 1500 chevy, and dw's tahoe. I think those tires (goodyear wrangler hp) are junk personaly. I broke bands in 7 out of 8 tires I had, with over half tread left.

Yes you will need bags most likely. Most of the ram 1500s ive seen have had a cargo weight (passengers and cargo included) of around 1150-1350 lb. So with your hitch, tongue weight and a couple people you will be at the max.

Ps. They ride smooth, but not rated to handle much more payload than a car

Good luck on your decision!!

With the new coil springs in the '14 2500, they are worth every penny. Plus, for the extra cost, you get a lot more out of the truck. Down side is that the HD trucks don't have that torqueflite transmission as an option. Enjoy the 1500!! They are all great vehicles.

Thanks for the info. I did notice the coil springs in the rear. Not used to not seeing shocks in the rear. I will have to wait to hook up the camper and tow as i am still waiting for service work to be done on my Salem.

My 2 cents.Try the Timbren set up.They work well on my 13 1500.No rough ride unloaded and they pick up the slack just fine.

I have a 2010 1500 and love it. I have pulled quite a few miles in the year I have had the trailer with no issues at all. My tongue weight is 850# and I have the same hitch as you. My rear sits down a little more than I would like but not to the point of instability. I do need to get out and readjust my hitch as I just don't think the dealer got it adjusted quite right.

I have a 2014 ram 1500 and the airlift airbags at $90 make a huge difference. I only squat 1/2 an inch with my windjammer attached

The 8 spd is an amazing towing tool. Downshifts for a hill are in 800 rpm increments so it can pull a hill and remain pretty quiet in the truck

Our old Yukon would go from 3000 rpm in third to 5500 rpm in second to pull a hill with the old 4 speed.

Looks like a great and economical solution to the soft rear coil springs on the newer 1500's. Anyone reading this have experience with this product?

Got the Tembrens yesterday. Installed today and did a test hitch up and short drive. No change in ride quality unhitched. Improved stance of vehicle nicely - gave me nearly 2" less drop in rear and got me within 1/2" of unloaded height on front (both as measured at the fender wells). Ride quality seems much improved on short shake down run. Will be able to tell more on our next real trip. Note all of the above are of course with WD in use. Hope this might be helpful to others with newer Ram 1500's who are suffering from a saggy rear end.
