Thought this would give folks food for thought.
Ok here is something I ran across in one of my well known car mags that has a tech person on board and is highly respected and Knowledgeable.

There was a question asked should I buy a diesel or go with gas. Shorten the question to quote I will use the truck for driving to work about 5 miles per day and then a couple of times a year towing camper and car trailer 1000 miles or so.

Answer Quote: I love the theory of compression ignition(diesel) and as you said they sure run well and make power. With all this said I would advise not to buy the diesel. but buy the gas.
Reasons
It adds about $8500 to the cost of the truck.
They are costly to repair
You will need to treat the fuel year round for best performance. or at least in the winter
Your short drive to work will kill the engine. A diesel due to it's mass of block takes much longer to heat the oil than a gas.
The engine will require the use of DEF which is no big deal just another thing to do.
Diesel fuel is more expensive than gas. Though diesel is fuel efficient., if you do the math the break even point on fuel savings alone is around 250,000 miles. and that is if nothing breaks on it during that time.

When it comes to gas engines all three make excellent power plants.
The authors selection t end of article was the Ford 6.2L says it's awesome for snow plowing and out pull Chevy or Dodge.

Just some food for thought and one needs to know what he want to do with the tv. Later RJD

Looking like a 10-12 k jump to go 3500 diesel... That's a big leap.

We did about 40 nights this season, about 3500 km (about 2200 miles) - don't know if that's enough to justify the jump up...

Trailer were looking at has a pin on 2062 dry, so figuring 2200 loaded; still gives 1000# of overhead for passengers and 'stuff'... My gut is saying it's enough, without going too big; but definitely open to discussion.
Guessing pin weights are tough. The one below in my sig had a 1950 dry pin weight and 9,990 dry trailer weight. I loaded 1180 lbs and pin jumped to 2740 real pin weight. It started at just below 20% dry pin but jumped to 24.1% loaded and I exceed at Chevy 2500HD diesel by over 700 lbs and withing 200 lbs of the axle and tire weights.

Even if you stay gas I would still go to the 3500...

DEF's not a big deal, you're right - about half the trucks we have at the firehall are equipped with DPF/DEF systems - but it is "one more thing"

I've got a Ford 250 gasser as a work truck... 6.2 pulls an 8000# generator trailer like it isn't there.

My preference would be a Ford - but Dodge is giving the trucks away right now, it seems... Maybe give my Ford dealer a chance to sharpen his pencil a bit, and go again.

It doesn't matter if you go gas or diesel, Ford, Ram or GM do it right and go 1 ton. You won't regret it.

We went with a 2500 when we bought our Rockwood, Two years later we traded for a Wildcat 317RL. The 2500 did the job but I was pushing the GVW. I recently traded for a 2015 3500 and have no regrets. if you ever decide to go bigger you're set. If you already have a 2500 you are happy with it should work fine.

Well, if appears Ford's back in the running...

Amazing what a phone call, and saying "I went to the Dodge dealer yesterday..." can do.

2015 350 SRW
6.7 Diesel
FX4 package, dressed up nicer then I wanted, to be honest... for 58k

Payload of 3424#, towing 15.7k...

Hmmm...

I just ordered a 2016 Ram 2500 with the 6.7 Cummins. This will be my first Ram, only had GMC products in the past. Everything I have heard about them has been good things.

I have a 2012 ram 3500 CC Limited SRW with the 6.7 Cummins, there isn't a better diesel out there than the Cummins for towing. This truck pulls my 5er like it's not even there. Ram has come a long way and right now I think it's the best diesel or gas truck on the market. Other than one recall it's never been back to the dealer. I just wish Ram would put a better tire on the bigger trucks, those Firestone Transforce HT tires SUCK.

You can put 350,000 on a gas motor too.

To the OP, I have a 2015 2500 6.4l big horn. Payload is 3108 on the door. $40k out the door. Diesel would be ~6-8k more. I chose gas I've diesel because mine would be our family wagon 99% of the time being driven short blasts in our 4 stop light town year round. It tows pretty well.

You're gonna know that 5er is back there. And as stated earlier, pin weight will add up fast. Towing my W&P 30fbw bumper pull with a quad and 800 Rzr, family and dog we were at 9200lbs on the truck. TH has a dry hitch of ~1600. Less when we have toys in the back. You'll be pushing it with a 2500 gas.

IMO, the 3500 6.7 will handle it better. Test a few. All 3 make pretty decent rigs right now. In the end, it's what ever tickles your pickle. Good luck and happy camping.

I bought a fully loaded 3500 dually Larimie with 4x4 with aissin transmission, nav, for $54,235.00 from kernersville Dodge in North Carolina, I flew in from Birmingham , they were great, the truck listed for 67,000 - I love the truck, people were flying in from all over the country. Before you sign - see what they will do, saved me 12,000 from the local dealers.

I know that your ram is good, but my 3500 dually has averaged 20.5 miles per gallon for 12,000 miles, I also pull a 15,000 cattipillar skid steer about twice a week,. Love the ram , first ram I've owned. Best truck I every had , I'm 60 years old and had them all.

My 2500 CUMMINS sticker was 72.
I walked out paying 55. Canadian.
Deals are out there. They were offering free CUMMINS at the time, plus a boat load of other discounts.

I have the Big Horn with the 6.4 Hemi and all the option you are thinking of. But being across the border from me you would love the heated steering wheel and seats on our cold winter days. I understand your point of the diesel costing 10k more, the block heater and cost to have it plugged in, def fluid, oil changes cost more, and today in Michigan Gas is $2.39 Diesel is $2.79. Yes some of us are on a budget. With all that said if you live and travel in the Rocky Mountains and tow on a daily basis I might own a diesel. The Hemi did struggle a bit going up to Rocky Mountain National Park this summer, but east of the Rocky's it does fine. Avg 9 mpg towing 15 mpg city, I have gotten 18 mpg hwy.

I'd go 1 Ton dually diesel or you'll enjoy 7 mpg or worse. My buddy found out the hard way. LOL
Just because gas 3/4 ton will pull it don't mean you should do it. Don't listen to the truck or RV salesman they sell not tow.

I hardly believe the 6mpg unless your doing some heavy mountains. I tow with a 6.0 gas and get 9.4mpg. Just remember diesel guys fuel is not going to stay at $2.30 for ever. What I posted earlier will tell the tale of having to drive 250,00 miles to recoup the cost of diesel and that is if it stays in one piece.

As they say to each his own I'll never own a diesel and as I've said can not justify the high cost and recouping that expense. I trade to often. I like you diesel folks spending other folks money tho. Cool. Later RJD
