2016 RAM 2500 spec/order
Well, we did something a little foolish last weekend... we went to the fall RV show.
DW saw (and fell in love with) a mid-bunk 5v'er. We haven't put pen to paper on that yet; but she's serious enough about the trailer, that I need to get serious about a truck that can pull it. FYI trailer we're looking at is a dry pin of 2k, and about 12k dry...
Stopped at the Dodge dealership last night; and built a truck - be interested to hear pro's, con's, and general comments... It's not a dedicated TV, but I have a separate truck for work, and the wife's got an SUV for grocery-getting... So it's main uses are running around town, and dragging a trailer.
2016 2500 Ram SLT Crew cab / 6'4" box
6.4 Hemi
4.10 gears
Factory brake controller
5th wheel prep
8.4" UConnect w/ Sirius and backup camera
Few other goodies (remote start, running boards, etc) for 61 k CAD - seemed pretty reasonable to me.
I didn't go with the auto-leveling airbags, just because I don't know anything about them...
So - comments?

Well heard a lot of good things about the truck and I almost bought one in 2015 and was going to special order mine as well. I had also intended to go with the 3.73 gear just for a little better mileage when not towing. I'm sure some of the folks that bought them and are on the forum will chime in with there comments. Later RJD

IF it was me I would bump it up to 3500, not much difference in price but you get the payload for the next RV show you go to. I don't know what you thoughts about diesel but I would at least think about as a option.
I don't know if Ram has the Option but I have a Fast Heater Option that will pump hot air out the vents before I can back out of the garage. Well worth the 250 bucks.

I'd definitely go diesel over the gas engine for lugging 12K lbs around behind you.
Also, you start out with 2423 lb of payload in the SLT trim according to the RAM site.
You are considering a 12K dry 5er, so after loading stuff in, we'll go with 13K wet and loaded. 20% pin weight of 13K is 2600. You're already overloaded.
Even if you only load in 500 lbs of stuff youre at 2500 payload, still over weight.
I don't think this truck is enough truck unless you dropped to the tradesman trim which gives 3064 payload, and even then, you're only leaving 400 lbs for people and items in the truck.
Get a 1 ton. Diesel. Or a smaller 5er. Or a TT.

The diesel actually knocks about 1000# off the payload...
With the 6.4, the 2500 (as I dressed it) is good for about 3300# payload and towing 15,600# , with the 6.7 payload drops to 2300# and tows 16,100#.
3500 SRW jumps the payload to 4000 # for both engines, 6.4 tows 15,600 again, 6.7 tows 17,000#
Diesel add's almost 10k to the price, plus there's DEF to deal with...
I don't know if the extra 700# of payload is with the price jump from a 2500 to a 3500; but maybe worth looking into...

The door sticker on the truck will be somewhere between 200 and 700 lbs lower then what it says on the website due to options you add.
You are right that payload on 2500 drops to not much more than a some 1/2 tons when you added the diesel option. That is why if you going diesel you need to jump to 3500 class truck.

I am going to assume kenny thought you had a 5er since the OP has one too. I wouldnt worry about it too much, if he had looked up your unit he would have seen it was a TT and your GVWR is 10k (hitch weight 1.5K) well within your trucks capability.

We have the 360IBL and have really enjoyed it. Got it first--in February and then the truck in May--a 2014 Ram 350 dually diesel with the 6.7 Cummins Turbo Diesel with exhaust brake and 3.73 rear axle. Brand new-only 29 miles on it-and got it for a fabulous price because of the model year. It tows the 360 like a dream and gets fairly decent mileage around town (for a big truck--17 to 18 around town and 11-12 towing with about 19 on the highway with no towing). DH is in love with it...his first big boy truck. I don't know anything about weights or towing limits but know the 3500 handles the 360 so well that I would recommend looking into it if it fits in your budget. Ask the dealer if they have an older year new truck and hopefully you can get a bargain like we did. And it's RED!! Us with the two younger grankids and BART (Big Arse Red Truck)

3260 is the calculated payload, based on the options I spec'd on the truck.
Looking like a 10-12 k jump to go 3500 diesel... That's a big leap.
We did about 40 nights this season, about 3500 km (about 2200 miles) - don't know if that's enough to justify the jump up...
Trailer were looking at has a pin on 2062 dry, so figuring 2200 loaded; still gives 1000# of overhead for passengers and 'stuff'... My gut is saying it's enough, without going too big; but definitely open to discussion.

Suicide.. Thanks.
Just a note though... The website says 9995 for my unit but the sticker states 11480!!!
I'm still ok it's just amazing though at the difference....

2062lbs will be 2600 when said and done. Most all trailers are weighed without batteries and propane. All the stuff you put in the front will go against the CCC of the truck. Also add 150lbs+ for a 5th hitch.
FWIW I have a Ram 2500 CTD and when getting the oil changed at the dealer I take the time to browse the lot. I open doors and look at weight stickers. I think you'll find the CCC for that 2500 Hemi to be closer to 3000lbs in most trim levels.
That's only going to give you around 400lbs for you, the wife and I'm guessing kids cause you're looking at a bunk model.
As others have said it would be wise to jump to the 3500. Even in diesel trim the CCC is 4000lbs +/-.
As far as the diesel end goes that's a tough call. JMO but only 2200 miles a year wouldn't justify the CTD option. Although even with the 4.10 gears you'll still slow down on the steeper grades it's only for a short period during the whole trip.
A 3500 with 4.10 gears would be the practical choice.

OFF At the same trailer show this weekend and we priced out a Columbus. Good luck figuring everything out.
I know brand loyalty plays into decision when ordering sometimes. My local Blue Oval dealer is clearing out 2015 F series at significant discounts. Maybe have look on lots to see what is there, You might very well find a Diesel at end of model prices that matches your build price. The local Bow Tie dealer has a whole lot full of 2015 trucks as well. The goat dealers never seem to have tow ready trucks from when I was looking.
As far as DEF. All the hype and BS is just that. I have 12,000 km and filled the tank within the first week, while on a 3 week trip added 2.5 gallons so I did not run out and last month filled it again, Buying bulk or filling at the truck stop is cheap. I spent a total of $20 bucks on DEF for the first 6 months of ownership. the most expensive was what I bought at TSC in Goshen, $10 for 2.5 gallons.

B and B - I am a blue oval man, myself - but around here, anyways - 250/350 units, setup for towing, are few and far between...
The ones that are "out there" are either super basic work trucks, or King Ranch/Platinum high end ones. There doesn't seem to be any happy medium...
Even the dodge I priced out, I had to go to the fleet rep to spec out all the options I was looking for...
