2016 Ram 2500HD diesel towing

Hey all,
Recently upgraded my Ram 1500 to a 2016 Ram 2500 laramie limited diesel. love, love, love this truck. It pulls my 14 Vibe 826vfk with no problems.
Question is, we plan on upgrading to a fiver. My only concern is how big do I go. I know the 2016 Rams 2500s have a pretty low payload capacity.

Anyone out there towing a fiver with a new Ram 2500HD diesel?

Mine is an 05 5.9 with a programmer, pulled a Montana 32 ft 3slide. Empty weight was 10,800. Had no problems, I also have PAC airbags and exhaust brake. Just watch climbing hills and don't over push and get in a hurry, keep a eye on egt' and you should be fine.

My 2008 6.7L, 2500 Ram Mega cab is pulling a 2016 34RL Cedar Creek with no issues. One item I strongly believe is to monitor the engine either with gages and or a gage cluster; such as an Edge Insight. I watch my EGT's and Boost pressure when towing and will shift to 5th gear when the EGT's start to climb above 1100F, boost pressure is kept under 30 PSI at all times. The other parameter I monitor is the transmission sump temperature this is normally under 180F on a 90+F day when towing. But will rise to 200F when backing up the trailer on a slope or in a campground when position my trailer.

My other items I have added for longevity of the trucks operating systems are Mag-Hytec Differential covers, Mag-Hytec transmission deep oil pan, Air bags, a secondary fuel filter, Smarty S67 and LT285/70R17 126R rated tires with Mickey Thompson Side Biter II rims. These are rated to support a load of 3750 LBS at 80 PSI.

Subtracting the trucks loaded ready to travel weight from the GVWR as listed on the drivers door plate will give you how much load carrying capacity you have. If your truck scales at 8000 pounds and you have a 10,000GVWR that means you have 2000 pounds for cargo. That is, hitch (200 pounds) and fifth wheel pin weight. 1800 pounds of pin weight means you can handle a fifth wheel of around 9000 pounds Gross, NOT dry weight.

Without issues? Have you ever towed across a set of scales? There is a hugh difference between towing and carrying capacity.

I have a 2014 2500 Laramie Limited Mega Cab and tow a 2015 Wildcat 312QBX (34' 5th Wheel) without issues. I have the air suspension option that automatically adjusts trailer towing height and levels it out perfectly. I'm within pin weight/payload limits and wouldn't change a thing.

I have a 2014 ram, mega cab 4x4 diesel pulling a 2016 wildcat 328ck. I picked the 5er because it is lighter than some others we looked at. The dry weight is 10900 and loaded is about 12k. The ram pulls it easy, love the power and the exhaust break! I run with the tow/haul and full exhaust break. Set the cruise at 62 and it keeps me on speed up and down the hills. Pulls way better than the 30' TT we had.

2013 Ram CTD, 2013 HG272BH, about 31' hitch to bumper. Payload is 2375lbs
Truck by itself CAT scaled at 7980lbs with full fuel load. (dont have steer or drive weights separately.

WITH the trailer, full fuel load, my son @40lbs and a full 20lb LPG cylinder:
Steer 4520lb, drive 4440lb, trailer 6360, Gross weight 15320lbs.

4250+4440 =8690 - 7980 =710lbs
6360+710=7070lbs.

id guess the tongue weight to be closer to 1100lbs.

Pulls like a dream, zero issues.

Hello,
Yes, I have put it on the scale twice once Dry and once fully loaded. I never carry water.. My 2013 My 2500 Ram HD Tradesman has more than enough Capacity..
I can post the numbers if you wish.. but really don't want to start a 2500/3500 debate.. Run the numbers and if in doubt ask your dealer if you can run over a cat scale that's close if your worried about it..

Not to start an argument but are you ever over the factory rating of that truck. I had a 2008 Ram 2500 Megacab 4x4 Hemi and it only had a 2310 lb payload capacity with a 8800lb GVWR. The diesel has a 9000 lb GVWR and a payload rating of anywhere between 1520 and 1580 if memory serves me correctly. You can add all the aftermarket stuff you want but what the sticker in the door says is still what you can legally carry / haul. That Cedar Creek has a pin weight over 2k empty according to the website. I loved my old Dodge but back then Dodge did not think very much of their trucks payload wise. I know I used to have a 350 Imp gallon water tank I carried in the box of mine so full that was 3500lb of water and the truck physically had no issue but by the book I was Wayyy over the limits of that truck.
