Is there a significant non-towing mileage difference between 3/4 and 1 tons?

No, virtually no difference at all. I went from a '15 250 to a '17 350 and it's the same. The benefit of the '17 is the larger fuel tank. Seeing a range of over 400 miles is nice after the '15.

The 2017's and 18's have a 48 gal tank which is really nice but when I see the price of them I get this fainting feeling....LOL.

FWIW - if you're dead set against a diesel you'll want to keep your trailer around 10-12K at most. While the 6.2L is rated up to 15K (properly equipped) I think that's pushing it in regards to performance. The 6.2 is a great engine and will do whatever it's asked, but over 10K a diesel would be better suited.

That said, I love mine truck and wouldn't have it any other way but I don't tow much weight and new diesels are much too complicated and not as reliable as they used to be. My 2 cents...

I'm expecting to get either 4:30 or 4:10 gears for the rear. Our current Tundra 5.7L with 4:10s hauled about 9000 lbs. up the long way to Big Bear - that involved a 5000' climb and some tight switchbacks all of which were handled with aplomb. May have to park in the right lane or pull off a lot to let traffic through on the occasional hill but hopefully, there won't be too much of that. I would really like the jake brake in a diesel though. But the extra $10K up front for an engine that I know little about is a probably a bridge too far.

EXACTLY what we see real world... need to plan fuel every 200mi when towing. Actual is 240 or so, but 200 is the safe mark.
