2500/250 vs 3500/350
Looking at future upgrade to a fifth wheel. How big a fifth wheel can you safely pull with 2500 or 250? Let me know the model, size, and weight you are towing. Do I have to have a 3500 or 350 or more?

I currently have a 2014 Chevy 2500hd Duramax. Will be trading in for a 3500 1 ton but not due to this trailer. I got a great deal and this will handle anything we get down the road.
I tow a 40ft fiver but it is a lightweight unit at 12k loaded. V Cross Platinum 365. Weight slip is below. This would be about 400lbs lower then usual since I was shy 2 people and groceries and their luggage.

My 2012 2500HD had a GVWR of 10,000 and on my 36 ft wildcat with a kingpin weight of 2020 fully loaded my truck was about 500 over on the GVWR and that was with me the wife and our gear.
the advertised weight of the pin weight is 1750
i go with the 1 ton wish i would have the first time around

I'm towing a 2016 34' 5er with a 2016 F250 XLT 6.7. About 220# under payload ~ 350 if my freshwater tank is full. That is loaded for 2 - 3 months when we snowbird, less on shorter trips.

Oh man, what a can of worms you've opened!
Are you asking safely? Or within all ratings? Or within most ratings? Or adding onto the truck and then "exceeding" some ratings?
This topic goes crazy. Grab your popcorn and hold onto your hat!

3/4 tons have very little payload capacity. I just traded off a 3/4 ton that I really loved because of it. It had something like 1700 lbs available for pin weight (weighed wet and full of family and gear). If you assume 20% pin weight, that means it had capacity for a 7500 lb fifth wheel.... there are no decent bunk house 5ers close to that weight. Now, it's true, it's cummins drive train would easily pull much bigger, but not within the truck specs. If you are just getting the truck now, get atleast a SRW 3500... I went with a dually and absolutely love it... if you are gonna be pulling a 13k or bigger 5er, I would strongly suggest the DRW, then you don't have to worry about weight

Very seldom you'll say to yourself, 'gee I wish I had a lesser truck'.
