By no means am I a young man , but I do like my truck to run well and tow well.
The engine is bullet proof...but the tranny was known to be a weak point, so I had it rebuilt prior to any break down....now with new up dated parts and HD torque converter.
Getting the cold air in and hot air out is very important to a diesel engine and it doesn't have to be loud.

I would suggest getting one of these 12v meters. It will tell you a lot.
1)Plug it in the cig port and it will tell you the status of your batteries.
2) Turn the key to 'wait to start' and the voltage should go down to around 11.5v as the glow plug relay kicks in (if the voltage does not go down from power usage from glow plugs, check the relay for working)
3) When you hit the starter the voltage should drop to 11v. If the voltage drops farther than that and hits 10.5 or lower, you have a battery problem (Or starter dragging down the voltage). The truck must have at least 10.5v to start, anything lower and you are wasting your time of cranking as the systems will not let the truck start.
4) Once the truck is started and looking at the meter, the voltage will remain close to 11.5v while the glow plug relay is working and the glow plugs are still on. When the glows plug relay shuts off, the voltage on the meter will rise very slowly until it hits the output of the Alternator. This should be around 14.3v. If the meter 'stops' rising below 13.5v, then you need to get your Alternator checked.
This little meter has saved me and a lot of other 7.3 owners to diagnos part of your electric system quickly, easily, and accurately. Get one and see how your system is working.
