3008w. Windjammer

Would like to know if anyone has a 3008w windjammer, and pulls it with a 1/2 ton pickup and what make.

We do not have the 3008w but I pull our 3001w with a F150. Have pulled the trailer from Ont. to BC (a little over 3000 miles one way) and back twice. We averaged 10.5 mpg wish the truck had a bit more power on the hills, but we were able to keep up with the large trucks.

We have a 2014 Windjammer 3008W that we towed with a 2011 Silverado 1500 half-ton with a heavy duty towing package. This truck worked very well for our Rockwood 2604 - we towed it all over the country with the Silverado.

When we got the new Windjammer this spring, we made one trip through TN, GA, SC and NC. The half-ton did OK on level ground, but going up the Smokies it struggled (5.3 L) and coming down the Smokies was a little white-knuckled experience. We recently traded that half-ton on a Silverado 2500 HD 3/4 ton with a 6.0 L, and it handles the Windjammer like it wasn't even back there.

The 3008W can be pulled with the half-ton, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Hey Caper

We pull ours with a 07 tundra 5.7.
We are headed in August to the NE corner of pa. All our friends that pull a travel trailer are telling us we need a 3/4 ton pickup to pull the hills and to be safer. So far we have bee to the coast and the North Carolina mountains and have had no issues pulling the camper.

It rained HARD the day we left Asheville, heading west on I-40. Little dicey getting down the western side of the mountains.

Like I said, it CAN be done, but not something I'd want to do under anything but ideal conditions. We even put Air Lift air bags on the back of the Silverado to help level the load and make it ride better. they helped, but not enough. And at anything over 60 mph, you could feel the tt sway a little.

Make the trip to PA slowly and carefully, and then see what you think.

We have a 2013 V-Lite 30WFSS which is the twin to your Windjammer. We pull it with a 2003 Dodge 1500 with the 3.92 gears and Hemi engine that we bought new. We just got back from a trip to South Carolina from Indiana. We have made this trip many times before but with a 26' camper. Our half ton made the trip O.K but I wished I had a 3/4 ton to do it. This truck is paid for so I doubt that we will make a change anytime soon. Other than the trip down south we mainly camp in Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, where the hills are not too bad so we think our 1500 will do fine. Good luck and you will love your Windjammer.

Capt. Mike we never liked going down that mountain pass on 40. Many times you are stopped from rock slides, wrecks, or just too much traffic! This year we took a loop going through Asheville north on I 26 to west I 81 It brings you down to Severville. It is 60 miles farther but it is a beautiful road with 25% of the traffic and a much more pleasant drive. Check it out on a map, I think you will like it.

We have a 3008W and this is our third season in it. Season 1 we pulled with a Silverado 1500 2WD 5.3L and it did okay but we were doing all flatland camping. As I said, we did okay but I felt the truck was a little over matched. Before Season 2 we got an F150 Ecoboost 4WD Supercrew with standard tow package. Hauled the trailer from South Dakota to Georgia to Colorado. What a difference in towing! Leaving for MN in two days. I have no issues or worries about hauling the trailer with this truck.

Thanks for the suggestion, Bolt guy!

I tow my 3008w with a 2010 F150 crew cab 5.4l. First trip with a standard wd hitch and sway bars was not great. I added a Hensley for our 2nd trip (700 miles to Florida). What a nice difference. I still had way too much porpoising. I added the Roadmaster Active Suspension helper springs. This product does EVERYTHING they claim, including better gas mileage. I will tow our Windjammer anywhere any time with this set up. Very stable, now an absolute delight to drive! The truck should have diesel power and gearing for the mountain climbing, but keeps up just fine in the truck lane.

2013 Windjammer 3008w

I have had problems with control and sway with my new trailer. I haul the trailer with a 2004 GMC Sierra 2500HD Diesel. I have hauled heavy trailers before with a "standard" sway bar hitch with no problems. I hauled the trailer to Wisconsin in June and had no problems with sway. I hit a stretch of road east of Gladstone and in Green Bay and had a real problem with the trailer and truck "bounceing". I came back and the dealer suggested that I put on a 4 point hitch and I did that. Now I have much more problem with control and sway. I did adjust to put less weight on the hitch, but that didn't seem to help. Love my trailer, but I have got to solve this problem. Any suggestions?

I posted awhile back about needing a heavier truck to pull mountains. Before our pa trip we purchased a used f250. Felt much safer on I-81 thru pa. What a road. Since that trip we bought a new dodge dually 3500. Future truck for the new 5th wheel in a few yrs. would never go back to a 1/2 ton truck pulling a large trailer it's just not safe.

Caper - are you still towing with the 2007 F-150?
I'm looking at the new model Windjammer 2618W which is about a 1,000 lbs lighter than your trailer, but about 600 lbs heavier than the Jayco 25F I currently have (no issues towing that with my 2007 F-150 5.4L). Does your F-150 have the tow package installed and what hitch system are you using? Thanks....

Pulled our WJ 3008 to Texas and back last winter, 4000 miles, with our 2006 Chev. 5.3 Silverado, tow capacity 10,000 lbs., absolutely no problems towing. 12MPG
