So, looks like I may have not done all my research when buying this truck. Sort of made some assumptions of its capabilities since I was upgrading from a 2007 2500 (5.9 CTD, 2WD, short bed, SRW). Towing wise I am good, 17K plus, but lax in the payload capabilities. Something I will just have to live with.

Are there ways to raise payload capabilities? Air bags, upgrade rear suspension?

To compare apples to apples...I have a 2017 Ram 2500 Big Horn, 4x4, 6.7 CTD, short bed, SRW. Went and did some measuring, with the bed empty, it is 58" from the ground to top of the bed (measured at the rear tire.) It is 60" from ground to top of the bed at the tailgate.

I am like Havasu Bill, with a 2500 and a Cardinal 3250, I have no problems truck goes like it is supposed to.
Here are my weights and photos, In my opinion I am on the edge and I have no problems with that I have 410s and that increases my Gross combined weight rating.
Tires are rated at 3195 ea. x2= 6390 lbs.
My 5er has a lot of added weight, this is the max I would ever have. just came back from a 2 week trip.
DW, just filled up fuel plus 16 gallon extra fuel take "full", cross bed tool box with approx.125 lbs. of stuff not counting the box. (the box is no longer in, didn't like the thought of hitting 5er).
with no air in air bags for some reason. with a Curt 20K hitch.
So here it is.
looks like under on front GAWR. by 480 lbs.
Over on rear by 370 lbs. now that the tool box is gone thats better.
Under on 5er by 1,190 lbs.
Over on total 660 lbs.

With that all said, I am in the process of trying to figure out how to swing a 1 ton.

I think you mean you are 110 lbs to the good. Your scaled weight front plus rear 5020+6380= 11400, Your Ram GAWR Front plus GAWR Rear- 5500+6010=11510. Total GAWR (11510) minus actual total GAW (11400) = 110 lbs . All the Mfg's rate the total of the axle ratings higher than the GVWR. They say that each individual axle (front & rear) rating should not be exceed and the GVWR(9600) should not be exceeded.

I heard a customer asking a dealer that question once. The dealer said it can be done but by the time it was complete with government and manufacturer's paper work he would probably have turned to dust and the cost would exceed a new vehicle. So,,,, no there is no way.
