My old 7.3 pulls the heck out of our fifth, and all I did was put the big exhaust on it, straight pipe with no restrictions. The cool thing is that the whistle from the turbo comes through loud and clear, sounds like I've got a supercharger on it!

I am looking at several vehicles in our area but I neither want to buy a truck that is too weak, nor way over-powered. I can go diesel, but if gas is just as good, they are easier to find.
Currently looking at a 2007 F-250 Lariat 6.0 Turbo-diesel, a 2010 F-250 XL 6.4 TD and a 2008 Silverado 2500HD ExtCab 6.1 Gas. The last is the more comfortable but am worried about if we ever take on the Rockies with that rig, will the engine torque handle it.
Is this a non-issue or need I be concerned? (forgive me for being such a newbie).
I would get the 6.4L If you are going with Ford & may want to think about 1 ton if your going diesel. When I got my F-350 I had a TT (8600GW ), but wanted something to up-size with, Now & have a 5TH @ 9800GDW . MY truck is the 05 F350 6L PS . YES it the 6L PS. Haven't had any problem with it. You have to change oil every 3000-4000 & fuel filter 10.000-15,000. IF you don't then it will bit you in the butt. wouldn't think of getting a 6L 04 or older. The above posting have good points to look at too. If you plan on doing a lot of towing . go Diesel

Yeah, the old 7.3's simply last too long, and you would never have a reason to buy a shiny new truck!

I wish Ford 7.3 had stay around a little longer. I had to go with a 5" turbo back exhaust, to get life in the 6L. Your right they can hear you coming when pulling a load.
