I've got about six inches of space between the bedrail and the bottom of the 5'ver, that is!
I'll measure it when I hitch up in a couple of days.

You need 6" of clearance minimum, unless you always plan for the truck and trailer to be on the same plane of ground

I'm right at 6" with my current truck.
I'd think 5" to 6" is about the norm although I've see about 8" to 9" on a couple units.
They sat nose high and i often wondered if their hitch/pin box didn't allow further adjustment.
Two trucks ago I was at 4" and I had to be pretty careful on entrance dips and twists.
I touched lightly a few times with that clearance.

I have an 8528RKWS Flagstaff Ultralite and a Reese Revolution pin box. When I connected it to my Tundra, I only had about 1 1/2" of space. We did a trip from North Carolina down to Florida and back without problems. When we got home, everyone in the vendor community said it wasn't adjustable, but it actually was, and easily, so now I have 5" making it a lot less likely we'll back or drive at an acute enough angle to hit the rails.

Careful going too high. You want to be towing fairly level.
Otherwise you can be putting more load on the trailer's rear axle vs. front axle. And, it can also drop the rear of the trailer, making it more likely that you'll scrape on high points in the road/parking lots.

It depends on length of bed , length of trailer, weight distribution and other factors. The longer wheel base is the better the ride. And better chance of scraping belly or rear bumper. Too high of pin will cause loss in stability onside to side. If you keep things too close and tight you end up with a crappy ride find the sweet spot in the middle and ride will be great.

My clearances are whatever it is/was when the hitch was fitted. At the time I knew little was didn't even consider this. In practice I don't have any problems. It seems I have plenty of space between the bottom of the nose and the tub. I have a Reese R20 hitch and a Trailair pinbox.

I have a 6.5’ box on 2015 GMC 2500. My hitch is a Curt 16k. When I picked up my trailer at the dealer I had about 5” clearance on the bed rails. Backing into my drive way closed that gap down to the point I was uncomfortable. I adjusted my hitch up one bolt hole location and have 6.5” and have never been concerned about contacting my box rails since

About 8 inch and slightly nose down. More aerodynamic.

6" between the trailer and box unless you are out on hilly twisty terrain. I have problems at our camp pulling out of the drive which is a share turn going up hill and turning onto a flat road. The units sometimes touches each other coming out. I had to put a load of gravel down to cure the issue there.
