What is missing on a 6 pin?. The truck I bought has a six pin on the inside of the bed. How would I convert to the seven pin?

I really don't know. My dad's old horse trailer has that pug i think, and it was handy. I haven't used it in years. Since I wised up and got rid of my hay burners.

Mine is in the column in front of the tailgate on the driver's side. Very convenient. You have to duck under the trailer to hook the emergency brake cable and install the Butch type safety bar plus, the umbilical cord comes out of the back of the pin box which is also convenient.

That's exactly where ours is also. We didn't even know they were installing one when they installed the hitch. DH was pleased with where they located it when he discovered they'd installed it.

I surely didn't like my cord hanging over the tailgate either.

Like oc my cord exits the rear of the pin box as well, I think putting the plug ahead of the hitch towards the cab is asking for trouble imo.
Turning could tangle the cord in the hitch or levers and cuase issues.
Extra length could cause just as many issue's as being to short.
Since I have a slider I have two levers on the left side for the cord to get tangled in.

I am different than some I guess, I like mine at where it is pictured, near the left rear. It isn't hard to reach, plus I can hook the connection up(or leave it connected) while hitching/unhitching and have the added security of being able to stop the trailer if it were to roll by using the electric brakes. Once the rig has been taken off the hitch and is 'settled', I disconnect the electrical connection. I do this even though I have X-Chocks in the wheels. Some say it is dumb. Just being extra careful.

Left rear stake pocket. Used a 7 pin mounting bracker and bolted that to side of the stake pocket. Easy to hook up.

$65 and 15 minutes of time is not a waste considering how much time and money most of us have invested in our rigs. I'm sure everyone one of us has spent more on something less helpful.

Most but not all.

Are we gonna need to upgrade to an 8 pin when they start putting ABS brakes on RV trailers?

The dealers truck Ford F350 was set up this way. My hope is it keeps the cord out of the way better.
Attachment 46061

Here it is with a 7 to 6 way adapter plugged in.
Attachment 46062

Should give better bed access.
This was the way I did mine on my 06. Remove the tail light allows perfect access to the rear of the plug. Makes for a very simple install.

It's very convenient and poses no problems for me.

I have mine forward of the wheel well and every time I hook it up I wish it was near the rear. It's a pretty tough reach unless you are well over 6 feet tall to get to it otherwise. When things are dry its not too bad, but in the rain you get wet trying to reach in. Nothing major, but if I was to do it again, I would put it somewhere reachable from the back while the tailgate is still open.
As far as function, my current location has no issues while hooked up. No snagging or catching of any of the cords while driving. I have three cords: Trailer hookup, emergency brake , and backup camera.
And one last thing. Before I put this extra trailer hookup in I did use the bumper location and rubbed some paint off on my tailgate. No matter how I tried bending and pushing the cord a certain way, it would always make its way back to the same spot on my tailgate.
