5th wheel to box clearance

How much clearance do you guys run and not have problems? I have a 2008 chevy 2500hd and 2015 sierra 380bh5 with rotoflex pin box. B&w companion hitch adjusted all the way up, 1 set of holes for pin box to come down yet and i have approx 4" clearance when hooked up

Jim is right. 6" is ideal. 5" minimum. Over 6" ok too...

As for my experiences with box clearance - I really wanted to try and keep my fifth wheel 4-5 inches above the box since that's where the trailer looked the most level. The first time I backed into a less than perfect site I scarred my box rail and the underneath of the 5th wheel nose. Since I have been running 6" without issue.

As I recall the torque spec for my 5th wheel hitch was 90 ftlbs... that was for head bolts to side stanchions....

Hitch is a Curt Q20...

all the brands have deeper pickup boxes than they used too. Good for everything EXCEPT 5th wheel towing.

When the dealer switched out my pin box they used new bolts/star type washers and nuts. I questioned that and was told that the bolts were "stretch stressed" ? in other words, they are only to be used once and then tossed because they are now "stretched". This was in acordance with the lippertt/FR warranty. They torqued the new ones to 110 ft lbs.

edit) they also tightened and torqued them in a cross pattern, much like you would with a cylinder head or wheel. They started at 60, then 80,90, and 110.

You need to see what size bolts you have on it, when I changed mine the torque was 210ft. Lbs just google torque spec and go with that. It is also different torque dry vs lubed threads.

MTN GUY, I installed folding side steps under the bed just behind the cab. on my 3500HD. They work great.

5th wheel to box clearance

I found a single step Werner brand step in the ladder dept. at Lowes for $14.00, perfect for the F250 FX4, have no problem reaching the handle on my B&W.
