Well, it's been a while since this thread started and I last posted about 'window shopping' ~ did I ever find a goody!! Found a Silver, RAM 2500, 2016, Crew cab, Tradesman version with the 6.4 ~ used no less. Had 28K miles on it, which is nothing for up in this part of the country. Traded in the 2013 RAM 1500 which already had 66K miles on it. Got a good deal as far as I'm concerned. Tows the 26RR as if nothing is back there, get low 10's to high 13's towing and 15 to 17 running empty around grocery shopping. Has just over 30K on the odometer now and is ready to romp anytime I put my foot down. Thanks to everyone who has stayed in this discussion.

Congrats! I love mines also, I tow a 9,500 to 10,000 lbs TT and hardly can tell it's back there, I had to order it and I order it with the 4.10 gears.

I just bought a 2017 Ram 2500 6.4L w/3.73 gear. I have not towed yet but cant wait. What rpm do you all have while towing? My camper is 5,000 lbs.

With a 14k 5er I usually run around 2000-2500, up to 4k plus on inclines. 6-9 mpg. I just switched from a 2014 tradesman to a 2015 lonestar ( I got a deal on an upgrade I couldn't pass up). My 14 had 30k milles on it and pulled from day 1. This one has 20k on it and never pulled and I am getting about 2 mpg less. I am hoping it improves after I a few pulls on it.

My boat is close to 4k lbs and close to 32' on the trailer with a TeeTop and it pulls it effortlessly.

Due to health issues, haven't towed the 26RR since last September (Labor Day weekend). I leave the tranny in D and just watch my foot! The RAM 2500 stays around 2000 - 2500 RPM's and drags the toy hauler as if it was a utility trailer! Honestly, even going up grades, I had to watch my speed as the RAM would pick-up speed without being aware of it. Reason I've become so aware is the trailer having 14" tires and the TV having 18", I start to worry about the little tires overheating trying to keep up ~ LOL!! Even with the cold temps up here this winter, the RAM still gets 14+ out on the highway, running 87 octane. Best mileage running empty on the road is right around 67 - 68 mph.

I've got a '15 with a 5.7. I get about 7 1/2- 9 pulling about an 8500# FW. It runs about 24-2600 rpm's. I would've loved the 6.4, but the '15 was the last one on the lot and a great deal. Unloaded I get about 17-19 mpg. The 1809S (4500#) mini lite I had for a short time with it, I got about 13 1/2 mpg pulling.

I'm new to the forum, but I have a 2014 Ram 3500 SRW 4WD with the 6.4L Hemi. I'm very happy with its performance. So far I'm at about 55,000 miles with several cross-country trips into the Rockies. Plenty of power and (so far) no issues at all with the truck. I pull a Windjammer that is under 9,000 lbs loaded.

My 2016 Ram 4x4 CC with 6.4L is doing great so far at 10k miles. Milage is actually better than the 5.7L Ram 1500 MegaCab truck that I own. My question to all that own the 6.4L Ram is this: Do you have super high noise coming from your motor's cooling fan. The cooling fan on my Ram seems to stay engaged all of the time, even at highway speeds whether I am pulling a trailer or not. The local dealership where I purchased the truck states: "That is the heavy duty cooling system that's on this truck" and "Yours is not the first one with high fan noise that we have dealt with". What say you.

My truck personally does not do what you describe. I know the sound, in the summer, the fan will completely engage on startup while still at temp. The clutch disengages after about 30 seconds. sounds like a jet engine. If yours is locked at all times, I would say it's defective. Make them pull another 6.4 in the shop to compare.

I guess that I should say that the fan is making the noise but it is the fan clutch that engages/disengages the fan. I have not seen a fan clutch stay engaged all of the time unless its locked up. When not running I can spin the fan over by hand so I know it's not locked up. I can force the fan clutch to disengage by holding the rpm's a little high (@ 4000 rpm for @ 10 seconds) and the clutch releases. After this process the clutch seems to stay disengaged till I turn off the motor or get into some city type traffic. I say it's defective, they say that all of them are doing the same thing with the 6.4L motor.

On my 14 6.4 it never had any fan noise. On my 15 I hear my fan on occaision. I am going to have the tech look at it next on my next oil change. I am pretty sure it's the fan clutch. It doesn't do it regular enough. Sometimes at start up, sometimes up an incline, sometimes not.

I would add that there is no mistaking when its making the sound, it does sound like a big turbine turbo sucking bugs through the radiator.

I am still very pleased.

I believe they think the clutch is not defective so they don't want to change it out. I thought I would just get the thing replaced somewhere else. I am not sure what my choices are. They say that all the 6.4L's will make the fan noise and that's where we stand at this point.

Update:

I finally convinced my dealer to replace my fan clutch. It was defected and it did clear up the noisey fan noise. Changing the fan clutch made a huge difference. After my one year anniversary I feel like I have a new truck again. I am loving this truck. Thanks for all of your responses on my earlier posts. Happy Happy Happy

Good to hear! I'm almost two years in with mine and it has never had the fan noise unless it kicks in for additional cooling needs.

I bought a new 2500 Memorial Day weekend. I haven't towed with it yet, but I can't wait to see the difference between how the new truck and how my former 1500 handled the trailer. A few days ago I replaced the factory muffler with a magnaflow and deleted the resenator. It sounds like a truck now. 😎
