6.7L Ford Engine High Oil Temps?

Hi,
My '15 F350 is hitting 246 degrees on mountain passes. I'm not used to seeing such high oil temps especially since I'm not pushing the engine too hard-max 3/4 throttle when cruising.

I'm used to seeing temps between 215 and 220 on all of my other vehicles. The oil I'm using can handle the temps but I still don't like seeing it hit in the 240s.

Has anyone installed an aftermarket oil cooler and if so how and where?

Thanks!

TD

With temperatures that high, I would be worried that the factory oil cooler is on it's way out. Some type of debris or sand left over from the block casting will clog the factory Powerstroke oil coolers.

ScanGauge

Get yourself one and monitor the delta (temp difference) between oil and coolant temps when cruising @ 60 mph straight and level. A great source of info is on the Ford Truck Enthusiast website. Scroll down to their Diesel engine section and do a search. Good luck.
EDIT: I did a lil' leg work for you if interested....

I happened to notice mine a little higher than normal this past weekend and had the wife take a picture of it for me.
This was after coming up a steady climb for about 4 miles towing about 15,000lbs

I would also check the radiator cap. My 6.0 is supposed to operate with 16 psi through the radiator. If the cap leaks, you loose pressure and your temps will shoot up

Don't forget, oil is a major component of engine cooling on a diesel. Oil being sprayed on the underside of the piston is removing heat from them and naturally raising oil temps, especially on a hard pull when you are generating even more heat in there. If your EGT's are running 1000 plus degrees, you can imagine how hot those piston tops are.

That is normal on the 6.7 power stroke my parents 11 450 does the same thing we talked to Ford specially if it's very hot. No worries on that. Just make sure you don't see over 260 and you will be fine. It freaked me out big time when i saw that the first time I borrowed there truck to pull my camper. That was also from someone who helped design the engine told me it's okay also.

No, oil had less then 50 miles on it. It was the trucks first oil change and I put in 12 qts of 5w40 and 1 qt of 15w40. All synthetic. Guess they all run hot.

I know nothing about your particular engine, but why would you mix weights...on most engines that is not recommended

These newer diesels run hotter than before. That is why they require full synthetic. Those temps are just fine with full synthetic oil.

The rule of thumb I try to live by is keeping oil less than 50* hotter than your coolant. If you stay there you're fine.

High Temps

I just towed 2400 miles. Went from Phoenix to Flagstaff, AZ, couple big hills, over 100 degrees out and hit 242 degrees on my oil temp. Then went through Vegas to Provo Utah. It was 116 degrees going through Mesquite, NV and my oil temp was around 220.

No issues on the trip. 242 degrees concerned me also, figured high air temp plus the hills was the cause. Thanks for bringing up the thread, glad to see it isn't just me.
