Wind deflector mileage
I was going to get one of these, but figured out the payback isn't that good. Use some simple numbers or use this formula and plug in your own. Say your truck gets 15 mpg. If you use $2.30 a gal. for the price of fuel, it costs .153 cents for every mile you drive (2.30 divided by 15). If you travel 1000 miles, it will cost $153 (.153x1000). Using their high figure of +3 mpg you would then get 18 mpg. It costs .127(2.30 divided by 18)per mile, and .127x1000 is $127. You save $26 for every 1000 miles. The thing cost at least $350, + install unless you do it yourself. So to get back that 350, you need to go 14000 miles. 26x14=364. How many years will it take you to do that many towing miles? If you full time it might pay you back, but if you're just a weekender and vacation user, they don't seem to pay for themselves. If your mileage is worse, the benefits are greater. There are lots of variables including price of gas, so you need to put in your own numbers to figure out how much it can save you. You also are not guaranteed the +3, it could only be +1.
