Air conditioning while towing

I've noticed my airconditioner seems to work less efficiently when I'm towing my mini lite tt uphill on a hot day. Is this a normal expected decreased function under these conditions or should I get it checked out. The unit works perfectly when the engine is not under extreme load.

prolly something to expect....how are the truck temps? you have 2 maybe 3 radiators back of your grill coolant tranny and ac. going uphill especially on a long incline in a lower powered truck on a hot day...my guess.

You didn't give any manufacturer info, so I assume it's the Chevrolet in the picture? If so, yes, that's normal operation. When the engine computer sees certain parameters under load it turns off the AC compressor to free up some power, and that happens before you're on the floor.

most any vehicle will turn the ac compressor off when you reach a certain point in the throttle or high RPMs. Nothing wrong at all.

I agree "all normal"

Course a duramax a/c never shuts off with all that hp and torque available.
Ops did I say that?

And you're likely right, because with the available power on tap you probably don't hit that mark very often for very long.

It varies by model and engine combo, but 85% power demand is kinda the mark where the compressor turns off. Note, power demand, not throttle position. It's an algorithm that takes into account throttle position, vehicle speed, engine speed, transmission gear along with other parameters.

So if you never need to hammer it, it'll never turn off.

Uh oh. I've had some problems with my throttle position sensor. Ur post reminded me. I'll bet that intermittent TPS problem is playing a role in this.

In most if not all cars/ tricks built today have a switch or preset in computer when in heavy throttle/ full throttle the a/c shuts down, it is presumed you need the power and it aids in cooling under heavy load conditions.

So your answer is YES this is normal
