Normally I am against airbags... people often use them improperly to level a heavy ride when a WDH is needed. And this actually makes things less safe, and reduces weight on the front end.
However, it sounds as though you are looking for something to help your current suspension and cushion the ride. And for that, yes airbags are a good option.
As an additional option, and possibly cheaper, you could consider SumoSprings. I installed them on my truck and they have been great! I got lucky one day and found them for $150 (if I remember right) on Amazon. But they are usually about $200.
They are similar to airbags in that they cushion the ride, but are cheaper as they are a closed cell foam that does not require filling with air. They simply replace your factory bump stops. I believe Timbren also makes something similar.
A good chunk of the cost you were quoted for the airbags is likely the labor to install them. The SumoSprings were super easy to do myself. It took about one hour... and 45 minutes of that was spent just trying to get the old bump stops off. The actual install was as simple as screwing them into place.
