All you need to know about tires

Slow day at work and looking into new tires for the truck, 2014 Ram Tradesman 6 cylinder diesel, as we are heading out for 1300 mile trip to the southwest soon. After spending much of the time reading I am getting Michelin - X LT A/S.

I thought I would post this as it kinda covers two things, truck towing tires and exactly what tires are made in the US of A. as China Bombs are often a discussion in RV forums.

I fixed all the hyperlinks above for you. For some reason there was an extra http:// at the end of every url, which wouldn't take your link to the correct place.

It's all good now.

Im running the XLTs. Only issue I’ve had with mine is they seem to dry rot and crack between the treads before they wear out. Never had one fail but they they start to ride a bit hard. I don’t do a lot of driving so it’s more of an age thing not a miles. If you drive a lot it they’ll probably wear out before they dry rot.

I had not heard that until you posted this. I did some reading many "experts" state there are some oily protectants in the tires and when they are driven these seep out from the inside of the tire to keep the tire from rotting. But then many people state that their XLT's are on their primary car. Also many others say that this can happen to any tire but Michelin's seem more prone to it.

I don't want to put over $800 into tires just to have to replace in a couple of years.

How long have you had yours before they start cracking and do you still buy Michelin?

Sorry--my bad. The links were fixed in your second message and not the original. BTW, the author can edit their original post. I just discovered that feature!

The links are not working for me! When I click it goes to a page that says "Page not found"

Michelins have great tread. It will go the mileage that they say. The down side is the sidewalls. They won't last. They split, crack or just blow out. Not really the best tire on the market.

x2, EXCEPT: Michelin tires (including sidewalls) will last for MILEAGE, but they are not so good over TIME.

That said, I use nothing but Michelins on my F250 Superduty TV and my 155mph road racing capable Boss 302 Mustang. I do wear out the tread on the Mustang, but when I have to replace the TV tires after 5 years, they still look nearly new after about 35K miles.

For my 15,000 pound 5er, I use only Sailun S637T HD ST TRAILER units. My experience and research tells me they are the best.

The first set which came standard on my truck I replaced at around 60,000 miles/ 6 years. I now have 38,000/ 4 years on the replacements and am starting to see some cracking, not on the side walls but between the treads. The first set never gave me any issues but one thing I did notice when i changed to the 2nd set is a much smoother ride. These tires get hard over time when they dry out.

Not surprised with what you’ve found in your research. I stuck with these tires since they came standard on the truck, they seem to tow well and although I was concerned with the cracks, I got good service out of the first set and expect the same from the replacements.
