The first time you tow your trailer with that truck will tell you that you have made the best choice!

I just have to say that as a suburban soccer mom type, I have learned more about this issue than I ever wanted to know! LOL, who says we don't learn anything from our "fun" websites

You've got me concerned about payload on my 2500HD, where can I find out what the pin weight of my Cardinal 29rkls is other than scaling it?

Dunno about a Diesel, but our EcoBoost wanted 700 MI I think before towing any kind of trailer.

It's not so much about the engine as I understand it. It's more about wearing in the differential etc.
VERY nice truck you picked out there!

Thanks for the compliments, I really the the truck. I was set to buy this truck 2 years agi and talked myself out of it. That ultimately bit me a little in the end (trade in value was tough!) but it now resolved! According to the manual I need to put 1000 miles on it before I tow. And yes, the engines are broken in at the factory, it is the trans and diffs that need the miles before towing. We have just a little over 300 miles on it as of this morning and I have a 500 mile round trip planned for mid week for work. It will be close, but I think we can do it!

The easiest way to get close is GVWR of the trailer x 0.2 = Pin Weight. You have to keep in mind that is a VERY ball park number. I never really calculated mine, but instead: (empty advertised hitch weight/empty advertised trailer weight) x delivered weight (listed on the yellow sticker).
The real way to do it is take your combo to the scales, weight all 4 axles hitched. Then go unhitch, and run back through and weight just the truck axles. Then: total weight - trailer axles - unhitched truck axles = hitch weight.

I agree all around. For helping users estimate, they can use the tools at my site:
http://www.towingplanner.com
It has both estimators for figuring based on try weights (both ways that you mentioned) and once you go to the scales.

If it's any consolidation, factory tow ratings are products of the manufacturers' management--not engineering departments. There's no government regulations telling the truck manufacturers what tow ratings are for their specific vehicles.
And many trucks are rated to about 80% of what they're capable of--conservative for legal reasons.
What I don't understand is how tow rating differences between a 3/4 ton and 1 ton single rear wheel trucks is so great. Essentially the only difference is one extra leaf in the rear suspension.
Ram and Ford tow ratings are getting so high on their top rated trucks. I wouldn't care to be in one of those trucks towing some 30K loads--exceeding that of RV's. Those type loads are bordering on what a full size Kenworth would handle.

You will love it. Time to find some hills, set cruise at desired speed and grin all the way to the top.

I don't know about GM/Ram, but on the Ford, the rear axles are different as well. Larger actual axles and different spline counts. Whether the differences really mean anything, I don't know.

You will love it. I love mine, and I have only put 1500 miles on it. Of course ~500 miles are towing our Fiver, and it was great. I can't wait for everything to break in and see where the MPG goes. This truck is already getting better fuel economy than my F150, and apparently after ~10K it just gets better.
