If it's any consolidation, factory tow ratings are products of the manufacturers' management--not engineering departments. There's no government regulations telling the truck manufacturers what tow ratings are for their specific vehicles.

And many trucks are rated to about 80% of what they're capable of--conservative for legal reasons.

What I don't understand is how tow rating differences between a 3/4 ton and 1 ton single rear wheel trucks is so great. Essentially the only difference is one extra leaf in the rear suspension.

Ram and Ford tow ratings are getting so high on their top rated trucks. I wouldn't care to be in one of those trucks towing some 30K loads--exceeding that of RV's. Those type loads are bordering on what a full size Kenworth would handle.

Just purchased a 2015 Chevy Silverado 3500HD Diesel single axle. I pick it up tomorrow. Can't wait. First diesel ever. Always a 2500HD Gas.

You will love it. Time to find some hills, set cruise at desired speed and grin all the way to the top.

I don't know about GM/Ram, but on the Ford, the rear axles are different as well. Larger actual axles and different spline counts. Whether the differences really mean anything, I don't know.

You will love it. I love mine, and I have only put 1500 miles on it. Of course ~500 miles are towing our Fiver, and it was great. I can't wait for everything to break in and see where the MPG goes. This truck is already getting better fuel economy than my F150, and apparently after ~10K it just gets better.
