Just stepped out of my F250 GAS V10 and thanked my lucky stars it's not a diesel. Since 90% of my driving is not towing it is a pleasure to drive. Can't even hear the engine running, smooth as silk, I gassed up and remembered spilling a drop of diesel fuel on my hand years ago and it took 3 days to get rid of the stink. Plus I still have an extra $10,000 in the bank and oil change only cost me $60 at the Ford dealer and fuel is $1.00 gallon cheaper.
Love to stir the pot..

We travel a lot and have for years. I used to own a Dodge V10 gasser and many times getting in and out of filling stations with the fifth wheel was a challenge. V10 equals a lot of gas stops. Getting gas was always the most stressful part of RVing for me.
Now that I have a diesel I ALWAYS stop at truck stops and use the truck pumps in back. RVing is now stress free for me. I love diesel.

X2 one of the best benefits of having a diesel. I never worry about refueling anymore.

I'll throw an X3 on that. There aren't always truck stops where we go, but a majority of our fill-ups are at truck stops an it sure is convenient.

Not strange for me. My gasser was a 2002 Dodge Quad Cab with the Magnum 488cu. in. V-10 with a 4.10 rear end. MPG with this vehicle when towing my 11,000 pound fifth wheel was 5.0 to 6.0 MPG. That equals frequent fuel stops. Getting into gas pumps was the easy part, getting away from them could be problematic. I love using the truck pumps at truck stops. I don’t have to worry about the height of the canopy over the pumps and I don’t have to worry about maneuvering room. I can now zippidee do da up to the pump and zippidee do da away from the pump.
My current truck and trailer. Quite a mess after driving over salty wet roads.

I've had multiple Naturally Aspirated gas engines, diesels (1997 7.3 and a 2011 6.7 F-250), and now a Ford Ecoboost. As others have mentioned, there just is NO comparison in towing to a traditional gas engine. The Ecoboost does mitigate those differences some by shifting the torque curve much lower than a naturally aspirated engine. The Ecoboost actually puts out nearly the same torque numbers as the 94-97 7.3 Powerstrokes at only a few hundred more RPMs. I just recently traded the 2011 with 6.7 and went to the EB. The 800 ft.lbs. was incredible for towing, towing mileage was great, and I had no complaints about the truck. But when I started considering the additional maintenance costs and the potential for VERY expensive repairs (HPFP goes and you just spent a minimum of $10K) and I realized the smart thing to do was to ditch it. If I was in the financial situation to take a $10K hit, I'd still have the 6.7. Many complain about the mileage while towing with an EB. Those that do so lack basic understanding of the amount of energy in fuel. Diesel contains more energy per gallon (145K BTU versus 125K BTU) plus the ability to run at much higher compression ratios results in more efficiency. The point with an EB is to get decent milage while not towing, but to be able to tow much better than a traditional gas engine. I think that if one of the manufacturers could figure out how to turbocharge a small block V8 that would get typical V8 mileage but put out 600 ft.lbs. or so when towing they'd be on to something. They key would be to be able to manage the boost(maybe with user input? use tow/haul to cause turbos to spool at a different rate than normal?) to keep mileage up for everyday driving. Would mileage SUCK big time when towing- absolutely. But for the average person towing half a dozen times a year, it would still be MUCH more economical than a diesel.

Funny a friend has a diesel and is always complaining that he has a hard time getting the proper grade for his Duramax. Suppose it is not a problem if one stays near truck routes.
Gasoline is available everywhere.

Things must be very different in Canada. Here in the U.S. I have had no problems finding #2 diesel and no, I don't have to stay near truck routes. What does your friend mean when he says the proper grade??

I have not seen anything other than #2 diesel in this part of Ontario.

I've never had any problems getting diesel fuel anywhere. Right now, it's a little more expensive than gasoline, but it fluctuates just like gasoline does.. a few months ago it was cheaper than gas in my neck of the woods.

The engine lasts twice as long, but the turbo, injectors, tranny, rear end, etc may be a different story.

I have owned 2 1/2 ton Chevy trucks gas of course, and 1 3/4 ton GMC 6.0 gas. Now I own a F250 with the 7.3 Powerstroke and I will never own another gasser. Now I doubt I will own another Ford unless I can come across another 7.3 with low miles. There are to many horror stories about the 6.0 and 6.7. I would have to say a Duramax will by next choice, but that is a long long way off in the future since my truck has less than 35,000 miles on it

. Something wrong or heavily worked on your friends diesel. I know you really want to justify your argument but it's not even close. Most gassers I have ever seen tow get 5-7 mpg vs roughly 10 with diesel. Not to mention much better fuel mileage driving empty. I do admit the EPA regulations have made the mpg drop I n diesel but they still get better mileage and oh by the way... Double the torque. Doublet he torque is not a small deal DOUBLE!
