Another weight question...

Here’s one for you weight rating savvy types...
My GVWR is 9600#, My max towing is 12,400 (22,000).

Why would Ford make my GCVWR 19,000? It seems to me that this number should be the sum of GVWR and max towing, what am I missing here?

Thanks for the reply’s, just trying to learn something...

There is overlap in tongue/pin weight.

Your tow rating is for an empty truck with a 150 lb driver which should be about 6600lbs according to the rest of the numbers you supplied. 19000 - 12,400.

And those weights are base trucks! No options added. Every option for example, CD players, navigation, leather, fuel, carpet, everything that you don't normally think about, put weight in your truck and takes away from the carrying capacity, although a few pounds each, they still add up. Crazy huh!

That is crazy. You look at the numbers on the sticker and they seem so impressive, when you add everything up, there’s not to much wiggle room for hauling and towing. At least not as much capacity as the numbers lead you to believe. With my 200# brush guard, 200# cap, me and the wife, and a tank of gas I’m looking at about 7400#. Add 1000# for tounge weight and that’s 8400#, and that’s 1200 worth of stuff I can put in the bed before the truck is maxed. Add the TT at about 9400# maxed out and that puts me right at the 19,000# max combined weight. Hmm, careful planing and packing is key I would imagine.

What's really crazy - I got my DRW 3500 within 300 pounds of its GVWR when we were headed out for a 3-week trip with an extra adult with us!
