Anyone Double Towing with a TT? Pics or Setup?

Now that I have more than enough TV for my TT, I've been thinking about double towing my Jeep Wrangler behind my TT.

I have had the Jeep 4 down behind my 2500 and run with a Demco 8k tow bar setup that is overkill. I don't even know its behind me.

Most I have seen online double towing is a boat or utility trailer behind a 5th wheel.

Of course I would have a welder fabricate a beefy Class III hitch to the TT frame.

Anyone here doing it with a TT? (Flame Suit Applied)

Many states and provinces do not allow towing two trailers or if they do the first trailer need to be a fifth wheel and second a small utility trailer. Here is one site with info.

State Towing Laws

Here are some thread about multiple towing.

No state allows 2 trailers via bumper hitch.

First trailer has to be a 5th wheel or Goose neck, next trailer can only be a single axle lite trailer, i.e. boat, golf cart trailer, motorcycle trailer.

Some states require a Driver License endorsement like California... heck having a 3 axle 5th wheel needs a non-commercial RV endorsement

Hate to say it the infomany the state towing laws link is bad info
Wisconsin allows you to tow a boule without a permit the second vehicle must be a king pin or 5th wheel oal less b then 70 feet with road conditions limits
and you don't needs brakes till over 3000

The best answer isn't from some so called leagle advice site contact your local dot and the dot of where you plan to travel to see what the laws are

The laws seem to vary by state and I know Texas has the 65' length limit which I would be under with my proposed double tow.

I have not found where TT double towing is illegal. I would like to hear from people with experience doing it. I think my 4 down toad would be more stable than a single axle trailer with tongue weight and sway concerns.

Some examples:

Granted its a semi:

Looks like Texas allows any type of 2 trailer towing BUT if any trailers exceeds 4500 pounds then it will need a brake system controlled by the tow vehicle, you can not exceed 65 feet and not exceed the towing capabilities of the tow vehicle.
Unless you check with other states I would not leave the state towing this combination

I can tell you tho... pulling 2 bumper style trailers can get out of control in a heart beat.

From Texas DPS
Maximum Motor Home Size

The maximum length of a motorhome is limited to 45 feet. Towing a vehicle is allowed and even a triple tow is permitted, providing that the maximum length of all vehicles, trailers and items towed do not exceed 65 feet in length. As of 2012, there are not specific laws pertaining to vehicle towing available on the Texas Division of Motor Vehicles or the Department of Public Safety site.

Required Safety Measures

Safety measured required while towing include safety chains, flares and signs. A breakaway is required for trailers exceeding 3000 pounds in weight and auxiliary trailer brakes are required for trailers weighing 4,500 pounds or more. A fire extinguisher is not required by law but strongly suggested by common sense.

Check the DOT for each state, they vary. In Wisconsin what you propose would not be legal. We wanted to tow our Saturn Vue flat, and then the cargo trailer behind with the HD in it. NOT. Found out triple tow had many restrictions.

It is doubtful that the TT chassis is sufficient for minimally a 5,500 lb tow bar. The Jeep is coming up on that tow bar limit. The next concern would be insurance and liability for an accident waiting to happen. Just think, if you had to whip it to avoid a road hazard or another vehicle, it would cause a severe tail wagging event. Or even a rouge cross wind would put it out of control.

As for the TT chassis being sufficient, case in point. We had a 1977 Trek MH on a Dodge cutaway. The Dodge had a unit body chassis to which was attached a professionally installed 5,000 trailer hitch. We towed an 18' Starcraft cabin cruiser for several years--until the hitch broke off. We heard the noise and thinking it was an exhaust pipe, we eased to the shoulder on the Interstate. The boat trailer rolled to a stop on the trailer jack caster. The safety chains were attached to the hitch. By virtual luck, the hitch stayed on the MH till we stopped. I jacked the trailer off, lifted the hitch up and it fell to the ground. I'm pretty certain that Dodge unit body chassis is heavier than the TT chassis.

Thanks for the pic! Can you provide some details about your hitch and tow bar setup? Are you using a toad braking/brake away system?

I already have a wireless rear view camera on my trailer that activates when my running lights are on.

How does your rig handle on the highway?

All my stuff is homemade, 11/2"x 3/8" flat steel I made into a towbar, I have used that tow bar on about 3 different Jeeps that I have towed behind which every rig I may have had for the last 20 plus years, no brakes on the Sammy and no brake away on the hitch.
It tows like the 5th wheel can't even tell the Sammy is there.
I live in southern California and just go to the desert and back about 150 miles round trip a couple times a year.
I am debating if I will tow my little trailer with the Sammy on it ? as it stands right now I just flat tow the Sammy.
Here are a couple of photos of me my son and a buddy we're up in the High Desert.

This is just not true, many States allow towing 2 trailers and make no reference to a 5th wheel.
