Anyone put chains on their trailer?

We are looking to get chains for our trailer.
Has anyone else done this?

I have, on occasion, chained up the tires on my atv trailer but never my travel trailer. When it gets that bad, I leave the travel trailer at home. Chaining up the tires on my atv trailer kept it from slipping sideways. I have had to do this a couple times while hunting in Wyoming and it works. Truck was chained up as well. Let me tell you though, it is not fun cleaning all the mud off everything when tou are done!

Interesting.

When I lived in the Sierra's in CA we never chained up anything but the drive wheels. Never really had trouble with utility trailers and rarely if ever pulled out the TT during winter.

I've never seen any thing but the drive wheels with chains......... too me it would be too easy to damage the trailer. Why chains on a travel trailer????

Dirt roads in the mountains where I go hunting after a few days of rain or snow become almost impassable. I have a standing rule for a few of the places I go that after mid September, the travel trailer stays home. I have been caught a couple times and had a heck of a time getting out. I will still pull my ATV trailer in and I know as weird as it may sound have chained up the truck and trailer tires. It greatly reduces the fishtailing of the trailer.

Hey if it works for ya, who's to say it's wrong

I lived on a 15% grade dirt road for 7 years up there. Only way in or out in the winter was 4 wheel drive. That road would get so rutted from run off and stuck vehicle damage that come spring you still needed 4x4 till we could break out the heavy equipment and regrade the road surface.

Luckily now I am on a paved road and NO SNOW!

I hear ya! I am getting old enough now that I prefer to hunt early and be done before all that nasty stuff hits! The way our weather pattern has changed the past couple years it hasn't been as bad.

If driving in the mountain passes you must have chains on all axles. I would not be driving if the roads were that bad.

What state is that law in? In CA, NV & AZ it's drive axles only.

We were told this when we planning on going through Washington State. We called the DOT and asked them what axles needed chains when towing a TT. The said all axles needed chains including the TT.

I think someone gave you bad info. I checked the regs at his link - WSDOT - Minimum Chain Requirement - It is for rigs over 10,000 gross,, which would include many of us (although it does imply commercial rigs).

Take a look at the PDF for chain placement. The placement of chains for various axle configurations is pretty interesting and addresses the OPs original question to some degree - they only put a chain on one side of the most rear axle of the trailer. That surprised me.

In WA, you do not need chains if you have 4wd or AWD plus mud and snow tired, even when the chains required signs are out. I do not even have chains for my Ridgeline even though it has taken me skiing many times.

Bottom line is that if I need chains, I am not going.

Because we own a puny (compared to your trailers) 12' popup and in Korea there are a lot of mountains.
If I put on chains it's to go up and down the roads, and I figure chains on the trailer would help keep the trailer from jackknifing during braking.
Not camping just because it's snowing is NOT an option!

It can help while breaking but you have to have chains on ALL wheels of the TV and trailer. You must have excellent heating in your pop-up if you are camping in snowing condition. :-)

The only reason is to keep the trailer straight.

Just the standard heater that comes with the trailer. We are usually outside anyways and only sleep in the pup. We try to keep the trailer at or below 60 degrees inside.
It's winter. That's what jackets are for!

Great attitude! I Love it!

Thanks for sharing the pic as well! Looks like a lot of fun.

I may live in AZ but the cold never really bothered me...it was the whole shovelling/plowing thing that grew old!
