I would add to the above. In the 80s and early 90s we all ran with Ford 460s and Chevy 454s big blocks. Pulling it was 5-6 mpgs and 10-11 empty. So when the diesels first started coming on strong it was great to double mpg pulling going from 5-6 to 9-10. We also ran 100 gal LPG tanks and propane was less tha 50 cents a gallon. Then the 10% alternative fuel for fleet mandate kicked in and shot the price of LPG.

The Modern 6.4 small block is quite different from the 460 and 454 big blocks.

Automatic transmissions have come a long way as well.

It would be real interesting to see where we'd be without the introduction of low sulphur.

My brother has two 5.9 Cummins duallys with flatbeds and has had numerous 7.3 PS. All the above were/are 4x4. The above vehicles are mixtures of farm/ ranch/work and pull some big loads. Not a single one has ever got close to 20 mpg. Most fall into the 14-16 mpg empty and 9-10 pulling. My brother in law is a full time pipe liner he has had numerous Cummins and Power Strokes...same mpg. I only know of one person that gets in the high teens and he has an older duramax that stays in the garage and gets waxed weekly, the heaviest thing he pulls are his golf clubs.

Overall as a family we generally buy vehicles to pull with and that translates to capability (diesel).

I personally see about a 3 mpg diffence going from a the Cummins to a 6.4 Hemi. Thats pulling or running empty.

The best milage I ever experienced was 23.5 hand calculated in my 05 dodge 4x4 dually with a 5.9 6 speed. That was a 250 mile run, empty at 65 mph with a 40 mph tailwind.

My observations,

Salt...I see a common link to the problem here...next time you need to buy a Chevy Duramax!

I got 8.5 to 9 mpg towing our TT with a F150 5.4 6spd AT. Same TT with my 12 Ram 2500 CTD I got 11-12 mpg.
Empty the F150 got about .5 mpg more. The Ram gets 17-17.5 mpg on the freeway. The F150 got 17.5 to 18 mpg.
4000 miles a year towing saves me about $1000 over 5 years. There's the added interest. FWIW gas and diesel run about the same per gal here. $2.20-$2.30 for either.

Here's some other diesel mpg reading. I think you're stuck in a time warp. Most new diesels get better mpg. Not all but most. DEF and gearing have helped immensely.

X2. We use our 2007 4x4 2500hd Duramax for towing all the time. Avg 10.5 mpg while towing, when empty: 16 in town, 21 on freeway at 75mph. Real numbers

I went to p/u my little 5er from NE Ohio...to SW Arkansas. App 950 miles return and got 13.7 towing. Wished it was 16...but it wasn't. They is a lot of hills and I drove 60 or less most of the way and avoided interstate.

I think that this is beginning to change I believe if a person bought a diesel good for them and if a person bought a 6.4L hemi well good for them, we all have different reason to buy what we have.

I love my Hemi 6.4L it does what I wanted it to and I haven't and want look back, it's getting crazy here, buy what you want end of story.
