Ball/Hitch Lube
Trying to eliminate that darn grease that no matter how care full you are, gets on you, now with a new WDH, has anyone tried dry lube sprays instead of grease as a ball/hitch lube ???

I don't use any lube on my ball. Never have. Never will.

I tried a spray silicone once to get away from the grease problem, which did the trick. But I agree with nomad297, don't use anything. Just keep an eye on the ball, don't let it get rusty. Use some steel wool if it does.

Interesting... I've always greesed up the ball well. Might have to try running dry.

The ball should have grease, otherwise it will wear the coupler. Try a pc of copper screen wire if you don't want to grease it.

Was just thinking about the drylube sprays, that's all i use on all of my guns, great temp range, no dirt collection, and great lube since it bonds with the metal. For the guns i order Boeing Bo Shield, expensive stuff at $16 can.

 Not a bad idea to grease the ball, but I have never done it........... Currently my oldest trailer was an off rental that I bought in 1984. Now the largest bumper pull is a 1994 22' box trailer....... But I have gone to fifth wheels on the 36' camper and the heavy flat trailer I do grease the pins as they are heavier.
If you are towing all over the country I would grease too. The other possible issue is getting dirt etc. in the grease and causing wear that way. Cleaning the grease out the couple & off the ball frequently would also be a good idea.

Just use the correct grease for the correct size ball.

Hey f5moab, have you heard of "don't grease the dog"?
Just a thought. Our old Holiday Rambler my mom and dad gave us used to be greased and I had to replace the coupler due to grit grinding out the latch. Found out the hard way when working on the hitch, it dropped the truck when lifting to remove WD bars.

In my experiences, greasing the ball is absolutely unnecessary. Up until this week, I have never greased any hitch ball. I have been landscaping for 16 years and not greasing hitch balls has never been a problem. I have some landscape trailers that have well over 25,000 miles. No problems at all.
Funny this has been brought up. My Equalizer does the typical creaks and groans. I recently bought some Equalizer lube to lube up the WD hitch so I applied an extremely light amount to the ball.
When you think about it, the dirt the grease attracts could be worse than anything to the hitch.

Well,decided i couldn't let the ball go greaseless , but did decide to use my Super Lube Synthetic Grease, it's clear and a lot less messy, or if it is, you can't see it , and going to use it sparingly.

I grease akk hitch components that require it. Clean off old great and dirt and regrets again.

I use a hitch ball cover when the hitch is not in use. For reasons already stated I didn't grease the WD bars at first until I noticed the directions that said to. When the bars are not in use I wrapped the greasy ends with foil.

Anyone use the greaseless ball ? Think Anderson is the main or only one that has it. Think its a nylon cover over the ball.

I guess the reason Reese bothered to put a zerk on my gooseball is just because they had extras laying around then? There was a sticker (imagine that!) saying to greese before useing.Now before anyone says it,yes its a GOOSEBALL!!! which is no more than a heavy duty 2-5/16" ball coupler.
