Ball wear?

Just got back from camping this weekend and noticed that my ball on the receiver is wearing. There is small granular shavings on the receiver. I rubbed my finger under the tongue and it felt smooth. I have a Reese weight distribution system and its rated for 10000# and the trailer is right around 7800# loaded. The ball is 15 years old. It going on its third TT. Could age be an issue? Thanks in advance.
Joe

I grease everything that moves with bearing grease. Even the little sway bar ball and the trunion pockets
