Be careful out there

This guy passed me outside of Payson headed down to Phoenix doing about 70-75. I mentioned to my wife that he looked to have a lot of sway going on. Also a big trailer for a 1/2-ton. About 15 mins later I see brake lights and a trailer on its side. I said to my wife I wonder if it was that trailer that was swaying. well it sure was. this guy got way lucky. His truck stayed upright with his wife and 2 kids in it...Nothing is worth the extra time it takes not to drive safe.

It looks like he cinched up his bars a little too tight. Picked the rear end right up off the ground.

When I pull, I live in my mirrors. If I see movement back there, I get off the gas. Feel sorry for his tribe. Folks like this kill.

I wonder if he will figure out what caused the accident.

Wobbles the only way to get out of a bad sway situation is to pull out of it meaning steady wheel get on the gas once under control slow down, slowing abruptly will make it worse.

I live in Payson

I live in Payson for ten yeras now. I am currently in my rig in Wyoming. We drive the "Beeline Hwy" "Hwy 87" many times a month. NOTHING signed faster than 65 MPH and I think that is too fast for some of turns. Aways wrecks on that road. It is 4 lane all the way to Fountain Hills. That's 65 miles with nothing to slow you down except the Highway Patrol. Guess they weren't around.........

Boatman, I would never get on the brakes. Yes, also have driven out of situations where the trailer was passing me up. The issue here is that this guy was to fast for condititions.

Yep got that right. I sure don't feel sorry for them when they don't have a clue and know nothing about towing. Later RJD

IMO the best way to stop sway is to manually engage the trailer brakes while holding the steering wheel very steady.

Agree with actuating trailer brakes glad you know what you're doing Wobbles to bad that guy didn't, Had a similar situation with a half ton regular cab truck pulling to big of a trailer last year coming home from Bristol he couldn't climb the hills so he would do 85 going down and 40
Going up we kept passing him going up the hill then here he'd come going down with trailer swaying from shoulder to in my lane back of camper almost took my drivers side mirror off that's when I told Dw were getting off at next stop taking a break and letting the idiot wreck by himself

I think I recongize that stretch. Is that on 40 about 20 miles west of seligman? We came thru there once and it was a downhill with right hand sweep. F250 lost it with trailer and rolled into the ravine/ median right as we started down the hill. Of course no cell service and the truckers said they couldn't get thru to highway patrol. Luckily, took the race/track car on this trip- 15 minutes @120 to get cell service! Highway patrol said they had gotten the call 3 minutes before us and had dispatched flight for life.

I now carry a cell phone booster on long trips.

We see this exact same thing every year about a dozen times. 80 plus down 40 up. While I am just sitting at 65 on the cruise up and down any hill

We see it here also. I have a buddy that pulls his RV 70 to 80 everywhere he goes. Scares me to death but I'm not riding with them we are bringing up the rear doing 60 mph. LOL I keep telling him to slow down but he doesn't so I'm affraid one day his turn at this experience. Hope not but odds are against this type of towing. Why they do it I don't understand. I feel bad for them and on the other hand not.

I think a lot of times people don't realize how crosswinds can effect trailers or motorhomes.

This was southbound State Route 87 between Payson and Phoenix. Some steep climbs, but 70 miles of mostly downhill.

Yes, feathering the trailer brake will help also. No anti sway bar? Can't believe he is pulling a trailer that size with a 1500 either.
