I am buying a Puma 253-FBS 5er. First I need a truck and I want to make sure that I don't get a truck that is too high. The only answer that I have been able to get from Palomino is that "the unit must be level." That doesn't help me a bit.
Does anybody know the maximum bed rail height that will work? Alternately, what is the distance from the ground to the overhang of the 5er?
The dealer should be able to get a couple of measurements for you. You need the height of the overhang to the ground and the height of the pinbox to the ground when the camper is level.
The critical thing is the clearance between the truck's bedrails and the camper's overhang...shouldn't be less than 6". If you have 6" or more, you should be able to adjust the hitch plate height in the truck and/or the pinbox to make the camper level. Depending on your truck, the suspension will compress 1 -2" with the camper hitched.
Thanks for the effort Dave. The problem is that my local dealer will order one for me, but he does not have any in stock. The nearest that I have located in any dealer's stock is about 250 miles away and they weren't very interested in going out with a tape measure.
So far, what I am being told is that any stock pickup truck should work. I will act on the belief that this s true and hope I don't end up screwed.
Is your truck going to be a 4 wheel drive? They are a little higher then rear wheel drive and I understand that some have problems leveling them, flipping axles etc.
At any rate you can adjust the hitch in the truck and the
Pin box on your 5er to give you more or less room between
bedrails and camper.
when I got my 5er I was never concerned about it dealer adjusted it and away we went
