Bit the bullet and did it!

Just signed the paperwork for a 2011 Toyota Tundra truck tonight and will pick it up tomorrow. This means now I have my own TV for towing my trailer! Happy Dance!! Toyota had a good promo that in the end allowed me to get out of a lease half way through without tacking on money owed somewhere else. Now my budget is on a diet.

The funny part is that I really don't want a truck but it's a nice truck to have. I wanted to go with something that would be in the ideal range for towing on the west coast. Having my own TV means freedom to go wandering where ever I want. And the truck does drive so nice! Now to get use the size of the back end....

And the best part is that all the gas I put in it will go to my use. I have a hang up about the gas tank being on empty while it doesn't brother my sister at all. She would get my car with a full tank and return it on empty while I get her car with it on empty and return it close to full.

Years ago I ran out of gas twice in 3 days and learned my lesson after doing a lot of walking. On the second day that I ran out of gas anything that could go wrong did.

With all of this all said and done - not everyone's sister would be kind enought to offer loaning their SUV for towing so that I could take andvantage of an unblieveable deal on a trailer. Long story short - I thought I was safe in looking at trailers since I couldn't tow anything but it didn't work out that way.

Love my tundra! Pulls my fully loaded 8500# trailer like a champ. 5.7 engine is strong. Just wish it had a little more cargo weight room nearly max the 7000# limit when towing

The Tundra is built exclusively in San Antonio now (as of 2006). I just got my Tacoma a few months ago, then turned around and bought a 32' travel trailer. Kind of thinking I need to upgrade to a Tundra now!

Thanks for the thumbs up! I know I made a wise choice but had a hard time giving up my beloved Rav4 - just wasn't ready to say goodbye. The Rav4 is my all time favorite car that I have owned. But now there's a trailer in the picture and things needed to change. I need to pick up my TT from the dealership service department on Saturday so it will be fun testing the waters towing.

I also love the Rav... I almost ordered one, but settled on the Taco. It's tough to live without a truck when you've had one for awhile.

I'm told that the biggest difference between a 1/2 ton and a 3/4 ton is in the drive-train, bearings, axles, brakes, and suspensions. All much heavier duty in the 3/4 ton. The Tundra is almost a "hybrid"; something between 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton.

I drove one a couple of years ago on an off-road test track at a NASCAR race, and I was really impressed with the power, handling, and the general fit and finish of the truck, both inside and out.

My question, though, is in more like a traditional 1/2 or 3/4 ton when you look at the drive-train, bearings, axles, brakes, and suspensions?

I would day drive train is more 3/4 as I have pulled and 8400# trailer up a 7% grade and could accelerate easily. The pulling power is there as well as braking. The truck is rated for 7000# GVWR which means limited cargo with tongue weight. Not sure what the 7000# limitation is based on as the axles are are rated higher. So I would say in-between 1/2 & 3/4 on suspension. I would love to know what the limiting factor is for GVWR cause I have overloaded a few times (pallet is sod) and no issues

My truck tow rating is #8600 - not the largest of the Tundras but more than enough for my small trailer and me. I wouldn't had minded the largest but my budget did.

I have a light weight trailer and it's only me. Even so I try to keep the amount of stuff down. Currently I don't travel with water but might consider doing so or at lease with a little amount.

I went to get the truck weighed before hitching up today but I ran into problems at the scale - The lady in the booth kept saying it was reading negative on the axel. Tried moving but didn't do any good so I will return with someone that knows what they are doing since I don't. There were no posters to refer to and the staff isn't allowed to direct either.
